A special group of students in Washington, D.C. are being granted the opportunity to be mentored by some pretty impressive people. From Michelle Obama to Yo Yo Ma, the students at Savoy Elementary in Southeast are learning from the best, thanks in part to Kerry Washington and President Obama.
Washington adopted the D.C. school when it was named one of just eight schools in the country selected as part of President Obama’s Turnaround Arts Initiative.
One of the reasons Savoy was selected was its ability to highlight the arts culture. The Savoy students aren’t strangers to making the news. Just recently 105 students took their talents to the National Portrait Gallery to perform a flash mob routine to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
