Tony Award winning actress Audra McDonald will have her name in Broadway lights more than once this year. On the heels of announcing her role in the revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Night, Mother with Oprah Winfrey, McDonald is set to play Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.
Lady Day will relive Billie Holiday’s last performance, taking place only four months before her death at age 44.
McDonald has won Tony Awards in the categories of Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Porgy and Bess), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Ragtime, Carousel) and Best Featured Actress in a Play (A Raisin in the Sun, Master Class). Since Lady Day is typically billed as a play with music, this engagement could give her the opportunity to round out her wins with a trophy in the category of Best Leading Actress in a Play. If by chance this coveted role garners another Tony nomination, it would make her the most honored woman on Broadway.
Lady Day’s run dates have not been official announced, but is expected to play at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
