Jordan Davis’ parents held a press conference after Michael Dunn’s verdict was handed down over the weekend. Although Dunn was found guilty of the attempted murder charges, a mistrial was declared on the first degree charge of murder.
Last November, Dunn opened fired on a car full of teenagers, after being upset over the loud music that was coming from the car. Jordan Davis was killed in the mayhem after 3 out of the bullets fired hit him.
Lucia McBath, Jordan’s mother, said she and his father will wait for Dunn’s retrial. “It has been a long, long road, and we’re so very happy to have a little bit of closure,” she said in response to the verdict. “It’s sad for Mr. Dunn that he will live the rest of his life in that sense of torment, and I will pray for him.”
Ron Davis, Jordan’s father, who has been working along with Jordan’s mother to change Florida’s self-defense laws, including Stand Your Ground — became emotional during his response.
“[Jordan] was a good kid. It wasn’t allowed to be said in the court room, but we’ll say it. He was a good kid,” said Davis’ father Ron. “There are a lot of good kids out there. … They should have a voice. They shouldn’t have to live in fear … that if they get shot, it’s just collateral damage. … We do not accept a law that would allow collateral damage to our family members. … We expect the law to be behind us, and protect us. That’s what I wanted the law to do — to protect Jordan as we protected Jordan.”
