In between writing and re-watching HBO’s True Detective last night, I couldn’t help but to notice the “Being Mary Jane” season finale gasps and “OMG” tweets and Facebook updates. Although I’ve only watched 2 episodes, I find myself not being totally impressed or interested in the show.  But it’s an understatement to say that BET has tapped into an audience with the series.

Mary Jane’s character, played by Gabrielle Union, is someone that seems to have a lot of women relating to her. And there’s definitely nothing wrong with that. A lot of other people complain that the story is yet another stereotypical “woe is me I’m a side chick” aka Olivia Pope story. But hey, there are successful side chicks in the world, right?

The one thing you can’t deny is the fact that BET is putting black people to work. From Mara Brock-Akil to Gabrielle Union and the rest of the cast, Being Mary Jane is a certified hit. There’s no word on whether the show is coming back from a second season, but it’s safe to say with the ratings from last night’s season finale, from a business standpoint, a season 2 seems certain.

Clutchettes, what did you think about the 2 hour season finale?

I just finished the season over the weekend and although I do take some issue with the cast not being entirely black (we are all human and it shouldn’t have to take a multiracial cast for people to relate to different aspects of life) and a few other minor things but other than that I think it’s a job well done for BET, a network I haven’t watched in over a decade. I’m looking forward to the next season.
