Dr. Dre could become a billionaire

There are currently nine Black billionaires in the world, and according to the Financial Times, hip-hop legend Dr. Dre may be adding his name to the list.

Several outlets are reporting Apple is close to acquiring Dr. Dre’s wildly popular company, Beats Electronics, for a staggering $3.2 billion.

Dre started the company in 2006 with Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine, and since then it has grown to be one of the most popular electronics brands in the world on the strength of its trendy “Beats By Dre” headphones.

This year, Dr. Dre leapfrogged Jay-Z to be hip-hop’s second richest man (only second to Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs) with an estimated net worth of $550 million, and according to Forbes, if Apple purchases Beasts for $3.2 billion, Dre’s holdings, approximately 25 percent of the company, would nearly double.

Although Apple nor Beats has confirmed the deal, Dr. Dre seems to be already taking a victory lap. A video surfaced today of Dr. Dre in the studio with Tyreese bragging about being “the first billionaire in hip hop.”

  • Good for Dr Dre. Created a line of electronics (particularly headsets) that are fashionable and supposedly possess great sound, put it on store shelves at a high price point (probably to compete with Bose) and consumers ate it up; and now it has seemingly paid off. Entrepreneurship. Who can be mad at that?
    Kudos Dre.

Oh look, it’s the misogynist thugs actually making something of themselves while the educated & extra-average stay whining in debt lol. I always said it, and I knew this day will come. Next in line will be Diddy, Jay-Z, Kanye, Pharrel, Baby, 50, etc.

I suggest y’all turn up the hate. Adversity breeds perseverance. From Public Enemy #1 to the Forbes List. All day everyday.

I don’t really know much about Dre’s assaults against women. It seems he us a repeat offender too. Given those facts, I can see why conscious women aren’t inclined to let that fact rest.

I agree that giving to HBCUs would be ideal. I’m pretty sure Dre is not an college grad himself, so he gave to the colleges he knows about. The only way I would be cool with donating to a flagship school like USC would be if I started a fund for African American scholarships and recruitment.

Why does it have to be only “conscious women” who would give pause to letting a former woman beater slide? This is like admitting that the male species does not have a moral compass, unless of course it affects you. Look at how many rappers were up in arms at Oprah years ago simply because she did not have any of them on her show, but a man who beats up women is status quo for them and their fans. Very effed up.

Gosh, I said conscious women, because a big chunk of the population, male or female, is inclined to give men a pass for violence against women until it hits close to home. What I said was meant as a compliment for the women who have educated people like me who were not aware of Dre’s history of violence against women.

Now I understand your context, thank you for explaining.

All Dre did was license his name to be on the product. He did not create the headphones. Also, it is well known that his head phones are the crappiest and don’t hold a candlestick to Bose but people love them marketing gimmicks though.

Nothing brings hordes of bm into a convo faster (especially on a site for Black women) than the inclination to defend a violent thug.

Ain’t that nuthin?! Going hard too! Not surprising at all.

No it is the other way around; Nothing brings an army of bitter hateful black women like a news about successful black men doing great….

    • vintage3000

Take dre’s d— out your mouth boy, and realize you are on a site geared to Black women, not King magazine. Go spew your anger at the folks who are really holding you down–oh wait that takes balls. Nevermind.
