I stopped handing out fake numbers years ago. “Sorry, I don’t give it out, but you can give me yours,” became my new line. But because some men can be so aggressive when it comes to our number, some anonymous creators launched a “feminine phone intervention” site that provides a number specifically for unwanted calls.
Here’s the premise behind the fake number:
because we’re raised to know it’s safer to give a fake phone number than to directly reject an aggressive guy.
because we’re raised to know that evasion or rejection can be met with violence.
because women are still threatened and punished for rejecting advances.
because (669) UGH-ASIF, WTF-DUDE, and MAJR-SHADE were taken.
because why give any old fake number, when you can have bell hooks screen your calls?
The number is (669) 221-6251. Anyone who texts the number will receive an automatic bell hooks quote; callers will hear a computerized voice reading a bell hooks quote.
Don’t believe me?
Sarah Mirk over at Bitch magazine already tested it out. She says there are only two bell hooks’ quotes in rotation.
I think I’ll stick with my own line, you know, just in case I run into that person again. No need to make him angrier with a phony number, and why lie, anyway? But those websites that require a phone number upon registration when your login is really your e-mail address? Yeah, they might get bell’s number.
Clutchettes, would you give out this number to unwanted suitors?
