We’re only a few episodes into the Fall television season, but some shows are already getting the green light for their full season to be enjoyed by the masses. ABC is setting the tempo for the other networks with full-season orders, picking up drama How to Get Away with Murder and comedy Black-ish.
How to Get Away with Murder, which stars the always fabulous Viola Davis has become the top series debut of the fall. The series delivered a whopping 14 million viewers and a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49 in its debut. The season will have 15 total episodes.
The family comedy Black-ish,which stars Anthony Anderson and the terrific Tracee Ellis Ross, debuted strong with 10.8 million viewers and a 3.3 rating and is the number one comedy. The series had the highest-ever retention of Modern Family viewers for a regular comedy debut in the post-Family slot. The season will include 22 total episodes.
This is great news for both shows as they are proof that people want to see Black folks and people of color on our television screens. Viola Davis joins Kerry Washington as a Black woman who is the star of a drama series and we have Shonda Rhimes to thank for that. While the name Black-ish stirred some controversy before its debut, the show is actually cute, tame, and very funny. Hopefully, this will be a signal to other networks that diverse shows are needed because we live in a diverse nation and all people should be represented.
