National retail chain Dillard’s ignited an unfortunate frenzy when it displayed a holiday-themed decorative sign in the little girls’section of a Florida store that read, “Dear Santa, this year please give me a big fat bank account and a slim body. Please don’t mix those two up like you did last year. Thanks.”
A mother of three noticed the sign while shopping and decided to share an image of it on Facebook, while expressing her disgust over the underlying messages and how they could potentially have a negative impact on young girls. This then prompted nearly 400 others to repost the image and lodge their own online complaints against the display.
After the social media uproar, Dillard’s spokeswoman Julie Julie Johnson Bull told USA Today that the store “immediately removed it from the little girls’ display,” and clarified that the sign was meant to be sold among the other “whimsical” signs in the home merchandise section. As a result, Dillard’s will no longer sell the sign and has removed it from all of its 298 stores.
