It looks like America’s First Couple will be the subject of a movie tentatively titled, Southside with You. The film will supposedly capture the first date Barack and Michelle Obama went on while they were still living in Chicago. It is not clear what necessitated the need for playwright Richard Tanne to unleash a screenplay about the lives of the president and first lady before they became occupants of The White House, but he obviously thinks it is compelling enough for the big screen.
The synopsis will center on the day Michelle Obama who was Michelle Robinson before marriage, accepted Barack Obama’s request for a date. Both were employed at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin – and Michelle despite being younger was Barack’s boss. Michelle wasn’t game immediately but relented after some coercing from her future husband. The film will document the couple’s tour of Southside, including stops at the Chicago’s Art Institute and taking in Do The Right Thing.
Tika Sumpter has already nabbed the coveted role of Michelle while the part of the future president is still vacant.
It should be interesting to see how this shapes up once all the major players are in place. Either way, we can’t see this project being a flop. The Obamas will always be one of the most fascinating couples in the world.
