Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 10.33.20 AMIt looks like America’s First Couple will be the subject of a movie tentatively titled, Southside with You.  The film will supposedly capture the first date Barack and Michelle Obama went on while they were still living in Chicago.  It is not clear what necessitated the need for playwright Richard Tanne to unleash a screenplay about the lives of the president and first lady before they became occupants of The White House, but he obviously thinks it is compelling enough for the big screen.

The synopsis will center on the day Michelle Obama who was Michelle Robinson before marriage, accepted Barack Obama’s request for a date. Both were employed at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin – and Michelle despite being younger was Barack’s boss. Michelle wasn’t game immediately but relented after some coercing from her future husband. The film will document the couple’s tour of Southside, including stops at the Chicago’s Art Institute and taking in Do The Right Thing.

Tika Sumpter has already nabbed the coveted role of Michelle while the part of the future president is still vacant.

It should be interesting to see how this shapes up once all the major players are in place. Either way, we can’t see this project being a flop. The Obamas will always be one of the most fascinating couples in the world.

White screenwriter/director for a black love story?

    • Ms. Vee

      Yup. I smell a distraction.

    • Anthony

I agree. At this moment, we don’t need cute human interest stories about Barack and Michelle. We need Obama to use his power to actually make these local police take their collective foot off of our necks so we can breathe again. I am tired of leader who can brag about killing Bin Laden, but is afraid to name the devil (racism) when he sees it.

    • Brad

Maybe some of that will come out of the group he has commisioned and given 6 months to come up with solutions.

I never expected Obama to come out but, so strong against certain things. I always expected him to be poitical about some issues of race.

    • Anthony

I have no faith in commissions. There have been commissions that have told governments what to do about police violence and poverty since I was in kindergarten back in 1965. Governments almost never faithfully implement their suggestions. The President could get serious about prosecuting local police for civil rights violations, and it would do more than another 100 commissions.

    • Brad

Yeap he could but, I am not expecting that to happen.

    • Dessoftruth

I doubt that Congress and the Media would let him.

“I am tired of leader who can brag about killing Bin Laden, but is afraid to name the devil (racism) when he sees it.”

The pioneers of the white supremacist system control him. He is on their team. It is sad that black folk so desperate for validation couldn’t see this.

    • Dessoftruth

How has he bragged about Bin Laden? I’m tired of your Black Republican ass talking about MY president.

    • Anthony

For what it is worth. I am not a Republican. I voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012. Obama did brag about killing Bin Laden in nearly every speech of the 2012 campaign.

Voting for someone gives me the right to make demands, and to be critical. The President has leverage on local police departments that he has been unwilling to use. For instance, just last week, he refused to stop sending surplus military gear, like the tanks used in Ferguson to local police departments. There are local grants he could deny to offending departments that would make it much harder for them to function, and as I said before, he could allow Attorney General Holder to be much more aggressive prosecuting bad police for civil rights violations. Distributing 50,000 cameras for police and announcing new anti-racial profiling guidelines that he will only use on federal agencies (which do not apply to the TSA and Border Patrol,) is only window dressing in my opinion.

I just don’t believe that the President has ever been willing use his political capital to benefit African Americans. Groups like bankers and old line Democratic Party machines have gotten more breaks than groups like African Americans, Latinos, or even most unions, and these are the groups that tend to vote reliably for Democrats.

    • He’s OUR president (ALL AMERICANs) and why shouldn’t we criticize him (and all gov’t officials) when necessary? Obama is not above reproach! I agree that Obama, like other politicians, is serving a master who is NOT the American people! I suppose after he leaves office, we’ll really get to see how he performed as President. Let me make one thing clear, I don’t have high expectations of most people who have been elected into office. I’m actually surprised when they do anything helpful.

This is only to divert our attention from the more pressing issues at hand, black lives being snuffed out.

    • Dessoftruth

The Bill Cosby rape thing is a distraction too.

  • Me

will the story of eric garner’s first date with his now-widow ever make it to the big screen? i’d sooner watch that than give anymore attention to this celebrity president. my money will be staying in my pocket when this movie drops.

    • Dessoftruth

“This celebrity president”? This man has done more for your weak-minded ass than Lincoln, assuming you’re Black. His affordable care act has made sure you are able to survive without having to deal with insurance company. You sound like a hateful asshole.

    • Me

“hateful asshole”… right… b/c i’m the one who blew a gasket over one person’s opinion, right? oh & p.s. i had insurance before obamacare & it doesn’t stop anyone from having to deal w/insurance companies since everybody is now REQUIRED to deal w/insurance companies by law, but thanks for thinking about my well-being. maybe you should take a nap now.

  • NuNu_BeRrY_pErRy

That’s what I’m talking about I can’t wait to see that movie
