Ava DuVernay certainly is speaking truth to power. She is right that we have to confront the issue of police brutality in our communities. Also, we have to not only learn about the present, but we have to understand about the past too. The movement of Selma was not the work of just one man. It was the work among the poor, the working class, and others who decided that enough is enough. These heroes wanted voting rights to be protected in a federal level. Dr. Martin Luther King, James Forman, Diane Nash, Bevel, and so many other people worked in forming the Voting Rights Act. SNCC should be given great credit for their grassroots efforts during the Selma campaign. Even Malcolm X supported the Selma movement. LBJ wanted the civil rights movement to be more to his liking (which was about reformism not revolutionary changes), but the black liberation movement had other plains. The Black Panthers evolved from SNCC, the Deacons of Defense, and other revolutionary organizations. The Voting Rights Act has parts of it gutted by the Supreme Court and we are still fighting for our voting rights now. There is nothing wrong with black people developing their own infrastructure so more of our true stories are shown. Ava DuVernary definitely needs encouragement and I want her to fulfill her dreams without question.
