In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.

Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job). The drama is produced by original N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are joined by fellow producers Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright. Will Packer serves as executive producer of the film alongside Gray.

Though I’d forgotten the casting call, huh, filmmakers? I didn’t. This thing isn’t getting a thin dime of my cash. Done.

    • Noirluv45

      Ditto!

      You’re right Sister.

    • Khrish

can you post why you feel that way?

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

If you look up the casting call you see their girl ‘types’–which are troubling.

    • Khrish

I’ve only seen this trailer. Do the girls cast fit the description of the girls that were a part of their life style?

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

This site doesn’t seem to allow links but it wrote an article called ‘Straight Out racist Casting for Straight Outta Compton Biopic’. Take a look at it and you may very well be unpleasantly surprised–a LOT of people were. It wasn’t meant to be released to the public, it was a slip-up, but no one, especially black women were surprised by it. Please take a look.

    • Khrish

I will find that article and read it. I’m thinking that at the time of NWA, the girls had to be a special kind to ride and run with them, which means they would have looked for the type-cast in making the film. Is that the problem? I certainly couldn’t have seen myself as one of their “fly girls”. if you get my drift.

      I’m neither.

You can’t see yourself as being considered attractive by the negroes making a flick about these negroes, yet you are still praising them for ‘doing good the American way’ and want to support this flick.

btw you have no drift to get, you’re just stupid.

    • Khrish

That’s your opinion. And you know like Aholes, we’re all entitled to one.

    • uhoh-ohno

No, that casting announcement was a racist mess. Whoever wrote the ad set up a veritable paper bag test hierarchy for black women, with light skinned women at the top of the food chain and darker women at the bottom. This is supposed to be a period film, and the casting call tried to play it off as if the only women with status or those considered desirable back then looked like Beyonce or were mixed race, but that’s fallacious.

John Singleton already did a 90’s LA Compton film. It was called “Boyz n the Hood.” Take a look at the women who played Brandi, Tisha, Shanice. None of them looked like Beyonce, yet all were considered hot. There was none of this colorist BS where brown/dark skinned women were low status in that film. They were representative of “round the way” girls from back then, but according to the Straight out of Compton casting announcement, it’s doubtful is any of them would have been given speaking roles or exposure.

    • Rizzo

looks like beyonce was the prototype for their ‘b’ list — not that great of a complement for someone so famous. kind of sad how all of this is working out.

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

The girls in the film (according to the film) did have to be of a ‘special’ type to ride with the group, and the type was not black. The casting call rated the women according to what they assumed to be attractive characteristics and the blacker you were the uglier you were. The only way a ‘medium-to-dark’ woman could appear it was as an overweight, poor and unattractive. That’s just to start.

    • G

The casting call was more then deplorable. I looked upon it as being “Kneegrow Marketing”.

      Statement of said marketing meeting.

When all else fails, insult and degrade AA women . . . . ” they’ll be whipped up in a frenzy and we will get tons of free publicity. It might be negative, but it just about insulting those a bunch nappy head, gold diggin hoes . . . so who cares what they think? Besides they’ll have forgotten about by the time of the release date anyway.”

NOT ONE RED CENT OF MY HARD EARNED CASH, WILL THESE KNEEGROWS GET!

    • Love.tweet.joi

I was gonna say something when I first saw this article, but I figured I’d let everyone have their excitement over this. I was so… hurt at first, but never did I think I belonged in that D group. Not. In. My. Entire. Life. These girls nowadays…I tell ya…

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

I just wonder about the mindset of the girls who would actually go out for a ‘D’ part. The call was hurtful, but what’s sadder is that I didn’t blink an eye at it. I know that there are all kinds of calls that look like this, but this was just when they got caught. I know many like this have quietly been released since.

    • paintgurl40

Maybe the girls don’t really know. Like their agent will only tell them to go audition, but that casting call grading system is probably only known between the “shot-callers”. The girls show up to audition for one part and later on get offered something else based on their looks, and they take it because they want the money and exposure.

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

I wondered about that, about the possibility of people sweetening up or omitting the worst from calls like this, which I imagine are myriad. Or, lying. Or, bait-and-switching. Welcome to the humiliating world of acting.

    • paintgurl40

Exactly. In the trailer, the only woman that was dressed was Dre’s mother. No thanks.

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

More misogynoir junk. Keep it, you know?

  • Khrish

I, personally, am waiting to see this film. I admire the way these guys made their good lives the AMERICAN way.

    • Objection

What does the “American Way” mean? The American Way has included slavery, child labor, human right’s violation, and monopoly. Eazy E made his money by selling drugs to African-Americans. Why is this something to celebrity?
Personally, I’ll pass on this movie. I hope one day someone makes a movie about Alonzo Herndon. Alonzo was born a slave and died a millionaire.

    • Jo ‘Mama’ Besser

But Black Dynamite, I sell drugs to the community!

    • Objection

LOL. Black Dynamite says, not all black folks are kinfolks.

    • Khrish

and if you read more diversely, The Kennedys and all the rest that have the real WEALTH did the same thing. Remember? It was just another type of drug or game

    • Khrish

BTW no one is ever BORN A SLAVE. They are born into slavery.

    • Rizzo

      check out Aristotle on slavery.

    • Rizzo

      chris rock described racism.

    • [email protected]

      Exactly.

  • Mary Burrell

    That disgusting casting call
