Naturi Naughton rose to fame as a member of 3LW when she was a young girl. But her rise to fame hasn’t always been so smooth. In an interview with VladTV, Naughton, who currently stars in Starz’s popular series Power, spoke candidly about the pressures of Hollywood and the music business.

Naughton understands how it is to be a brown skinned black women in Hollywood and said it’s interesting that ‘dark skin’ is now an ‘in’ thing, especially after the rise of Lupita Nyong’o. But when she was starting out, that wasn’t always the case. The more racially ambiguous you were, the more parts you were offered. But Naughton says she didn’t let that stop her. Now coming into its second season, Naughton says shows like Power and Empire prove that black shows do garner an audience and popularity.

Although Naughton has done everything from television to Broadway, she also stated that life after 3LW included her being blackballed in the music business. She said producers wouldn’t work with her, and she had a hard time clearing her name from the drama surrounding the group. But if you look at the previous members and their careers, I guess you can karma has a way of turning things around.

  • I always felt she was the most successful from the group after they split, I don’t even recall the names of the other two group members.

Hmmm….Interesting. Can’t take her experiences from her and I am glad she is doing her thing but she is one of the weakest links on Power IMO, so best of luck to her.

When I was a teenager (and in my early 20s), I heard of the records from 3LW. Naturi Naughton honestly is discussing about her life experiences. Being blackballed is not uncommon. She told the truth about how the evil of colorism still exists in society. At the end of the day, talented black people deserve opportunities (just like anyone else of any color) to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.

Im glad that shes successful, she went through a lot in 3LW they treated her horribly and she had the best voice in the group, I dont even look at the other 2 the same after that.
