Brian Helton is a mayoral candidate in Oklahoma, but he has performs drag in blackface as a woman named “Pollyester Kotton”. Helton, who has performed as Kotton since 2005, is now apologizing to people who are offended by it.

Helton says that his character was inspired by one of his hair salon clients (Helton is a stylist) and it’s not meant to be racist, and of course he’s not racist because he has black friends.

“It’s just satire, she’s a character,” Helton told KFOR, NewsChannel 4. “Anyone that’s offended, I would sit down and talk to them. Because my heart is, I would never do that and want to help whoever I can help,” Helton said.

“I don’t see myself as being racist, I’ve got great, great friends who are African American,” he added.

The local Oklahoma chapter of the NAACP said in a statement that, “The character could have been just as effective done without the black face makeup and would be far less offensive.”

After hearing this man in an interview, I think he is a gay politician who fit in by parodying a black woman. There is no way he did not know what he has been doing the past ten years.

Why is his character’s last name “Kotton?” That is a red flag for me. He has no choice but to apology as a means for him to continue his political campaign. It is very degrading to witness those who make a blackface in an offensive way. White folks, who use blackface, is about mimicking what that they can never be. They can never be black and they could never be like us. Therefore, some whites try to copy us, but they can never duplicate our creativity, our souls, and our melanin.
