Can you imagine Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill? Well if Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has her way, Tubman could be in the running to replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
“Our paper currency is an important part of our everyday lives and reflects our values, traditions and history as Americans… It’s long overdue for that reflection to include the contributions of women. The incredible grassroots support for this idea shows that there’s strong support for a woman to be the new face of the twenty-dollar bill, “Shaheen stated.
The Group Women on $20s already had a petition going asking people to vote on one of 15 notable women and the four finalists are Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks and Cherokee Chief Wilma Mankiller. There will be one last round of voting before a final candidate is featured in a petition that will be sent to the White House.
President Obama has previously said he thought it was a “pretty good idea” for a woman to appear on U.S. paper currency.
