Netflix has released the trailer for What Happened, Miss Simone?, their Nina Simone documentary which was directed by Oscar-nominated director Liz Garbus. Unlike the upcoming Simone movie starring Zoe Saldana, the documentary is fully authorized and incorporates concert footage, archival material, and interviews taking place over three decades.

The doc takes a look at the life and times of Simone — both the good and the bad — using rare interviews, her songs, and archival footage approved by Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly, who served as an executive producer. In the doc’s first trailer, we hear Kelly narrate Simone’s story, warning that her mother “was Nina Simone 24/7 … and that’s where it became a problem.”

The documentary airs on June 26, exclusively on Netflix.

My HOPE is that the intimate connection with this Movie Project is cathartic for Ms. Lisa Simone Kelly — want her to find Closure to any ill feelings that lingered between her and her superstar Mother.

Certainly, Nina Simone had a legendary career. The preview of the documentary outlines her as a human being with great consciousness and other issues that we all (as human beings) experience. In life, we all express diverse emotions and Nina Simone’s talent is eternal.
