It’s hard to believe, but when President Obama first took office in 2009, Sasha Obama was just eight-years-old, making her the youngest child to live in the White House since the Kennedy administration.
Throughout the president’s tenure at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, we’ve watched Sasha, 14, and Malia, 17, grow into beautiful young women who have become two of the most influential young people in America.
While many teens have wilted under the spotlight, the Obama girls seem amazingly well-rounded–hanging with friends, traveling with their parents, attending White House events, and putting in grunt work on summer internships.
Over the weekend, President Obama took his girls to New York City for a little daddy-daughter bonding. Last month the president joked his teenage daughters think he’s boring, so he’s trying to squeeze in all of the quality time he can before they’re both out of the house.
“They’re hitting the age where they still love me, but they think I’m completely boring. And so they’ll come in, pat me on the head, talk to me for 10 minutes, and then they’re gone all weekend,” the president said. “They break my heart.”
In New York, President Obama, his daughters, and a few of their friends saw Hamilton, a hip hop musical about Alexander Hamilton; took a stroll though Central Park; had dinner at a cozy Italian restaurant in the village; and enjoyed an after-hours tour of the Whitney Museum before heading back to Washington D.C.
Mrs. Obama sat this trip out, but from the looks of the too-cute photo of Sasha and her friends boarding Air Force One–and being carefree Black girls–the group had a whole lot of fun.
