“A little girl is dead. You say black lives matter? Her life mattered.”

Last week, Peggy Hubbard, a black grandmother, posted a video on Facebook venting her frustration with the #BlackLivesMatter movement and BLM protesters.

Hubbard, a U.S. Navy veteran and Ferguson native posted her Facebook rant after she learned about the death of nine-year old Jamyla Bolden who was shot while studying on her bed. In the video, Hubbard vents that the Black Lives Matters protesters should be protesting black-on-black crime instead of protesting for “thugs” and police brutality.

‘Last night, who do you think they protested for? The thug, the criminal, because they’re howling, ‘police brutality.’ Are you kidding me? Police brutality? How about black brutality?‘A little girl is dead. You say black lives matter? Her life mattered. Her dreams mattered. Her future mattered. Her promises mattered. It mattered.’

‘You’re hollering this ‘black lives matter’ bullshit. It don’t matter. You’re killing each other. White people don’t care … You’re shooting at the police. They drop your ass. ‘Oh, he died due to police brutality.’ 327 homicides later y’all want to holler police brutality? Black people, you’re a fucking joke. You’re tearing up communities over thugs and criminals.’

Check out the video below. Content warning: The language in this video is very strong and contains repeated profanities.

Hubbard posted a follow-up post detailing the feedback she received after her video went viral. She also posted another video apologizing for her language in her viral video.

Good Morning! Look, I don't pretend to have all the answers on whats wrong with the black community. I am just Peggy. I…

Oh I see…rather than focusing on saving Black lives and drawing attention to systemic racism and oppression, we should take this idiot’s advice and focus instead on the concerted effort of white supremacists to pathologize Black criminality (as if it were completely divorced from poverty, lack of education, and discrimination in employment and housing). Not to mention that most crime(and this is true of all races) is intra-racial! Call me petty, but I have a visceral hatred of Black folks who buy into the right wing narrative and are only too happy to do white supremacists’ dirty work for them by parroting the dumbest nonsense without any critical reflection whatsoever. This woman has her head so far up her own ass it’s a wonder she hasn’t suffocated yet.

The fact of the matter is, the killing of children is all too routine in our community.

And someone in the community, knows who killed this child, an everybody here knows that it is extremely likely her homicide will remain in the open case file!

Of course this woman is angry and feels betrayed . . . . I would be too!

Her anger is understandable, but what isn’t understandable is to call unarmed murdered Blacks, “thugs” and go on the maniacal rant that she did against her own people. We all are upset at the amount of crime in our society (not just the Black community), and there are many people fighting tooth and nail to combat it, but to slam the BLM because she doesn’t approve of their agenda, is ignorant, self-loathing, and in my opinion, self-hating.

I applaud Peggy Hubbard. Finally some in “the community” has the guts to say it out loud.

May Jamyla Bolden rest in peace. It is so sad that she die and yes her life absolutely mattered. However, I am going to need people to stop thinking we can’t walk and talk at the same time. We can be mad and concerned about police brutality AND the crime that goes on in our neighborhood. I am sure when that poor little child die it was the people in her community expressing anger and outrage. The majority of black people are not blind to our community needs and the changes it needs but the red herring argument of “black on black crime” (as a CJ major this one of the dumbest and debunked saying ever) needs to stop because it is not helping but further muddy up the agenda and cause discourse. I get it she is angry that this child die, I am too but you HAVE to dig a little deeper than ranting and raving about #BLM movement.

  • Not bemused upon your objection why you irate where resolution to solutions economic blight. Fight not isolated nor “politicians” eager to listen to much to discuss
since public assistance. Do actually give a damn about your view point nor those responisble for damage, typical embittered “Bitch” whom can’t see racist. Gal so accurate where your personal reward for belttiing yourself certainly not Blacks!
