Every since the Black Lives Matter movement crossed over to the mainstream, Right Wing media has been chomping at the bit to discredit it. From doubting claims of police brutality to outright attacking victims, sites like The Blaze, the Daily Caller, and Breitbart have been trying their hardest to bring it down. Wednesday, they found a new target: Daily Kos writer Shaun King.

In the past year, King has been one of  the leading conduits of information about victims of police violence. His tweets regularly rack up thousands of shares, and his follower count has ballooned to nearly 170,000. For many, King is a necessary source of information that the mainstream media fails to cover, and for others, apparently, he’s a threat that needs to be dealt with.

Wednesday, Conservative sites seemed adamant to bring him down, questioning whether or not he’s been lying about his race.

Breitbart News, the same website that smeared for USDA official Shirley Sherrod, ran a story questioning King’s racial identity.

An investigative blogger has accused Shaun King, a key figure in the Black Lives Matter movement, of misleading media icon Oprah Winfrey by pretending to be biracial in order to qualify for an “Oprah scholarship” to historically black Morehouse College. The blogger says King is white and has been lying about his ethnicity for years. King is a high-profile campaigner against “police brutality” and “justice correspondent” for the liberal Daily Kos website who told Rebel magazine in 2012 that he was biracial, with the magazine reporting that he is the “son of a Caucasian mother and an African-American father.” He has also described himself as “mixed with a black family” on Twitter. King has been lionised by the press, praised as hero of civil rights and social activism. He has written extensively about a childhood in which he was terrorised by “decades old racial tensions.” He claims to have been “the focus of constant abuse of the resident rednecks of my school. Yet, in recent weeks, rumours have been circulating about his ethnicity. A 1995 police incident report lists Shaun King’s ethnicity as white.

Breitbart News listed a police report of a 1995 incident in which King was beaten by a group of boys at his high school as proof that he’s white. Apparently, the officer marked the box listing white as his race, but considering King is pale-skinned, it’s possible the officer just checked the box he thought described King best. After he became a top trending topic on Twitter, King took to the social network to refute Breitbart News’ claims in a string of more than 30 tweets.

The reaction on Twitter to King’s tweets were mixed. Some compared him to Rachel Dolezal, others wondered why he didn’t just outright say he was biracial, and another group questioned how anyone could believe Breitbart’s account given their history.

And then there was this…

Despite King’s complicated racial history he said this latest attempt to silence him won’t stop him from reporting on police violence.

Every since? Really? I stopped reading after that. You can’t be a credible writer if you use the wrong word altogether. Confusing ‘then and than’ or ‘your and you’re’ is bad enough… but EVER SINCE I read the first line my skin has been crawling.
