A Maryland police officer did a good deed for a woman trying to escape a domestic violence situation.

Corporal Che Atkinson of Prince George’s County Police was sitting at work one day when another officer approached him.

“[He] said that there was a lady out there with a baby who was homeless,” Atkinson said.

A woman said she left an abusive home, but her and her daughter were put out of the shelter they were staying in. So Atkinson tried to help.

“All morning I’m calling try to get assistance. No luck,” Atkinson said.

He thought his job was done when he got a social worker on the phone, and went out to do his normal patrolling. But when he got back into the precinct the next day, the woman was still there.

“I was like did she come back this morning?” Atkinson said. “And the other officer says ‘no I think she’s been here all night.’”

He knew he had to do something.

“I told her this is what I’m going to find. I’m going to find you a place…I’m going to put you up for the night,” Atkinson said.

Out of his own pocket he got the woman and child a hotel room and food.

“It was here’s somebody here with a child – one-years-old – had nowhere to go,” Atkinson said. “I had the extra money. What would it hurt just to put them up for a night to make sure they’re safe?”

Atkinson said he’s shocked by the attention he’s received, and it’s nothing abnormal for him and his fellow officers to do.

“I’m a little overwhelmed and shocked. And the reason why is it didn’t seem like a big deal to me because I see other officers do stuff like this all the time,” Atkinson said “It’s not a big deal.”

People online said what he did was far from ordinary, they say it was a “beautiful act of kindness.”

“This is a helpless child so it’s our duty to help and that child was definitely in need,” Atkinson said.

Police said the woman and her child are now with relatives.

I’m glad that the woman and her child are with relatives. The officer did the right thing and he acted in a very compassionate fashion.
