Parody Of Nicki Minaj

If you haven’t heard, ABC Family is planning a sitcom about Nicki Minaj’s life as a child which, although it sounds a little weird, is a pretty freaking big deal. A lot of us don’t know much about the rapper’s Caribbean upbringing in Queens, mostly knowing the 32-year-old for her cutthroat punchlines and, of course, her backside. And we’re guessing that fact is why Ellen developed the rather tasteless parody of the upcoming sitcom that she showed to audiences on her talk show yesterday.

We all know Nicki’s butt has indeed been the butt of many jokes throughout her career and few could fault anyone for poking fun at her exaggerated backside. But that’s the thing, the reason her behind has become such a topic of discussion is because it’s overdone, and despite her coyness about going under the knife, clearly unnatural. What Ellen did in her parody, however, was portray an adolescent Minaj with a backside just as rotund, which is already a bit weird, particularly since she’s introduced to us bending over, and, when paired with a mother and father of equally robust buns, essentially mimics a minstrel show of the early 1900s, except this one is in color, and it’s 2015.

Sure, the pretend sneak peek may be all in good fun, but the way in which Minaj and her family’s butts are presented as hereditary traits brings back not-so-fond memories of the way white people used to put us on display for our large backsides and treat us as abnormalities against the norm of the day: white women. That standard still stands today, as does the sentiment of abnormality as the family in the parody knocks over everything with their butts and struggles to sit on a couch together. There’s even a dog that comes out with a big booty which takes away some of the minstrel awkwardness initially felt when viewing the clip, but we’re still more inclined to agree with this writer from Gawker who questioned: “what exactly was the joke? That Nicki Minaj has a big butt? (OK, fine, but that’s just the truth, not really…a joke?) That black people have big butts? That black dogs have big butts? That black women’s bodies are absurd?”

We’ll take all of the above for $200, please.
