It’s no secret that Billionaire Mogul and overall inspirational woman Oprah Winfrey came from a troubled past. She was sexually abused as a child and became pregnant at the age of 14. Winfrey gave birth to her son prematurely but he sadly passed away a few weeks later. The child’s death was something she remained quiet about until a money hungry relative exposed the information to the National Inquirer in 1990. While the betrayal initially crushed her, she soon felt relieved and did eventually speak (and continues to speak) openly about her past.
While sharing some of her life lessons during the Melbourne stop of her multi Australian city tour, she spoke candidly about the baby boy she lost all those years ago. She stated that she hid her pregnancy because she felt a great deal of pain and shame but that she was no longer burdened by those feelings.
“I did an interview with a reporter before I came to Australia and she said you should name the baby son who died,” Winfrey said. “So I have named him, I had a little boy named Canaan.”
Winfrey didn’t share the exact spelling she chose for her late son’s name, but she did reveal why she chose it.
“I did have a son. And I named him Canaan because Canaan means new land, new life.”
In the Bible, God brings the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and gives them a new life and a new land in Canaan.
She told the crowd that the harrowing experience she faced in her youth made her determined to be ‘excellent’ in her chosen career. Throughout the talk, Oprah urged her Australian fans, who shelled out between $99 to $379.90 for a ticket, to find their ‘authentic self’ and honor it.‘I’m here to help you turn up the volume in your life,’ the media mogul told fans.
“I was raped at 9 years old by a cousin, then again by another family member, and another family member,” Winfrey reportedly said, adding that she tried to hide her pregnancy at 14 because she felt so much “pain and shame.”
The “pain and shame” she felt as a pregnant 14-year-old was most likely the reason Winfrey decided against naming her son when he was born. But today, there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Everything this icon went through has brought her to this point and we’re sure glad she made it through.
