Florence Adepoju, a former employee of Benefit Cosmetics was often disappointed when the company released a new product that didn’t suit her brown skin.

“Everyone on the counter would get one, and I’d be like, ‘That’s not the right shade for me,’” she said.
So she spent four years earning an applied chemistry degree in cosmetics and set out to make the colors she wanted to see in beautiful packaging, inspired by her love for hip hop.

Two years ago, she launched MDMFlow handmade rose-scented lipsticks in shades like juicy orange, emerald green and brilliant blue, sold in gold-colored aluminum bullet casings.

“It’s not Halloween makeup,” Florence told the NY Times. “These are colors people can actually wear.” Milkshake, a blueish-pink named after that wildly popular Kelis record, is frequently sold out. So is a bright blue called Mas Marina.

MDMflow, so named because it was the only version of Florence’s nickname, Madame Flow, still available on Twitter, is now sold at Topshop Oxford Circus, Colette in Paris and online for us American lipstick lovers at Nasty Gal (where the lipsticks cost $18 each).

    Cool Story.

Did they have to be in bullet casings though? I hate how America seems to have this obsession with guns and how it is cool to have gun themed paraphernalia, it is so distasteful and disrespectful. It somehow fits into this Americanized world, heaven forbid someone from the middle east started selling bomb themed paraphernalia in the US shit would be shut down. Until the Us starts some sort of regulations on guns their should be some way to stop guns being gloried as accessories for consumerism.

Apart from that, it is nice she thought of this idea, but she’s not the first or the last but then again you can never have to many black owned beauty businesses, you never know when some start to want that white cheddar market.

She’s British and UK based – I think. Fortunately we live in a country where guns are not free and easy – even with the police – so it probably doesn’t have the same impact comparative to the USA.

Well it is still distasteful of her. I’m from the UK and I make sure I’m aware of all pain my brothers and sisters go through globally. I will not be co-signing the products because of the unawareness displayed.
