Yesterday we shared the first poster from Zoe Saldana’s upcoming film about legendary musician Nina Simone, and today we getting our first look at the film.

Written by Cynthia Mort and co-starring David Oyelowo, Nina follows Simone’s rise and fall, and focuses on the time the singer lived in France.

While the film could have been a powerful look at Simone’s life, it was plagued by controversy since the beginning. Simone’s daughter denounced the film as “unauthorized,” and many called the choice to cast Saldana as whitewashing. The criticisms only grew when the first images of Saldana in darkened makeup appeared, angering many.

Indeed, in the trailer Saldana appears in heavy makeup and her accent feels off, but filmmakers hope Simone’s fans flock to the film anyway.

Nina hits theaters April 22. Will you be watching?
