Despite being 2016, colorism is still a huge problem in communities all over the globe. In Asia, it’s difficult to find skin care products that do not include lightening agents, and while skin bleaching products are outlawed in many African nations, “skin toning” is still a huge problem.
Against this backdrop, people with deeper skin tones are sometimes made to feel less than beautiful, and some misguided souls believe telling darker skinned men and women that being “pretty for a dark skin” is somehow the right thing to say.
To be clear, it’s not. And British poet Princess Latifah explains how this backhanded is nothing to brag about.
