Few things in life have been more awkward to watch than Mary J. Blige singing a rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “American Skin” to Hillary Clinton in an Apple promo — except maybe that time Mary sang in a commercial about crispy chicken and fresh lettuce. But while last time Mary apologized “to everyone that was offended or thought that I would do something so disrespectful to our culture” for her Burger King ad spot, this time the singer gives no f-cks about critics who have something negative to say.
In a now-deleted tweet, Mary accused her haters of being crabs in a barrel, urging everyone to “shut the f-ck up” about not feeling the way she sung to the Democratic Presidential Nominee about how “If an officer stops you, always be polite. And never, ever run away, promise mama you’ll keep your hands in sight.”

The promo was intended to build anticipation for Mary’s upcoming Apple show, The 411, but so far all it’s done is spark a clever barrage of new memes.

On one hand, that’s kind of sad, given the seriousness of the topic at hand. On the other, we have to say Apple, Hillary, and Mary should’ve known better — Mary especially considering her last commercial disaster.
Is the Apple promo as bad as everyone’s made it out to be? Or are we all just crabs in a barrel like Mary says?
