She was the woman whose words wove a fabric of sisterhood in The Women of Brewster Place, and now Gloria Naylor’s words will live on forever, although she’s no longer with us. Naylor, at the age of 66, passed away last Wednesday due to heart failure.

Naylor, who was born in 1950, rose to fame after writing Brewster Place. The book was published in 1982 and won the 1983 National Book Award in the category First Novel. In 1989, Harpo Productions produced an ABC mini-series starring Oprah Winfrey, Robin Givens, Mary Alice and Cicely Tyson.

Other works from Naylor include: Linden Hills, Bailey’s Cafe, Mama Day and The Men of Brewster Place.

Naylor is survived by her sister Bernice Harrison; her niece; and a nephew.
