It was interesting when rumors surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship started and I spoke with a friend and said, “She’s about to become really black now”. I mentioned that because Markle, since her role on Suits, reminded me of the character from Imitation of Life. Not the “I don’t want to be black” part, but the fact that she’s not out proclaiming her blackness, but has referred to herself as biracial. And even a quick look at her Instagram account, shows no signs of “blackness”. All white everything – when it comes to her friends and social life.
Tabloids were all over Markle and her family when the news broke about her relationship with Prince Harry. Especially the Daily Mail. There was one article in particular, which not only made it seem like she was from the ghettos of Crenshaw, but even made reference to the fact that her black family still lived there. Basically, it was filled with blatant racism. Hence, my comment about “She’s about to become really black now”.
Now Kensington Palace has issued a statement about the couple’s relationship. And even they mentioned the racism undertones and trolling.

“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front of national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments,” the statement reads.
“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his. He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”
Guess we’ll have to see how long this relationship lasts.
