Here’s an excerpt from a revealing interview with the 23 year-old, who lists being a Victoria’s Secret Angel as one of her goals:

On Models Eating Cotton Balls:

“They dip it in the orange juice and then they eat the cotton balls to help them feel full.”

On How She Deals With The Pressure To Stay Thin:

“I’m a small girl naturally, but I can gain weight. And I’m going through little hormonal changes and my body’s changing and I’m like, “Oh my God, I’m gaining weight this week, I’m losing weight next week.””

On Rejection by Casting Agents:

“It’s your job to go into a room … and some people will just say no without an explanation, and some will be like, “Oh, your nose is too big. Your butt’s too big. Oh, your legs are flabby. Like, they’ll just go on you, “Oh, you need to tighten that up.”

Now that certain retailers are smartening up and including designs of various sizes, you have to wonder when the rest of the fashion community will catch on and eradicate the need for unhealthy eating practices once and for all.

Nike is appealing to its consumer base of women who wear mens clothing through its newest spokesperson, Brittney Griner. Griner, the 22 year-old number one draft pick for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, will model menswear for the brand.

ESPN reports: ”Griner’s deal is within this range; what makes it groundbreaking is the freedom. She will wear apparel branded as menswear, including the skateboarding line Nike SB, and she is allowed to pursue nontraditional marketing deals with outside companies.”

Wearing mens clothing is a natural fit for the 6’8″ basketball player, who is the first openly-gay athlete to sign with Nike. She says: “I used to do the whole baggy, hard-core, I’m-a-boy look. Then I went through a preppy phase. Now I have the athletic, bow-tie look. I found my style.”

ESPN writer Kate Fagan recognizes the significance of Nike and Griner’s decision, saying: “Androgynous models are coveted in high-end fashion, but the trend toward gender-neutral clothing has only just begun to reach the sports world, with NBA stars Russell Westbrook and Dwyane Wade blurring the lines in their tight jeans and fitted sweaters.”

Modeling mens clothes is a courageous gesture that may draw critics but Griner appears very comfortable in her own skin and with her sexuality as a “strong, black, lesbian woman.” She shares with ESPN that that wasn’t always the case and she endured a lot of pain hiding her sexuality at Baylor. Her father also made it known that he didn’t want to “raise a gay girl.”

The WNBA center is now out and proud, and tells Sports Illustrated “…just be who you are. Don’t worry about what other people are going to say, because they’re always going to say something, but, if you’re just true to yourself, let that shine through. Don’t hide who you really are.”

Songstress RaVaughn Brown may be the new kid on the block but she is fast approaching her way to stardom. Flaunting an eclectic/pop folk sound in her latest double-snapping anthem track, “Best Friend,” the first lady to Ne-Yo’s Compound University is ready to showcase her talent along with a dynamic look that we just can’t get enough of.

Humbly nicknamed “The New Voice of Women,” the Los Angeles native is commanding the public eye with her stand out vocals and by the way she modishly rocks a red carpet, video shoot or sidewalk. Clutch sat down with RaVaughn for some girl talk on summer beauty trends and how she conquers a fabulous short ‘do that would make any man a fool to place her in the “friend zone.”

Clutch: You’ve become quite the hair inspo for your fabulous short cut. When did you take on this look? Would you say your hair is a part of your brand or could we ever catch you flaunting a few extensions?

Ravaughn: Thank you! I chopped off my long locks about three years ago. My hair is definitely a part of my brand but that doesn’t mean that I won’t have in some extensions sometimes – but it’ll be fly! You never know what you’re going to get with me.

Clutch: Nice! So you’re not afraid to change it up. How do you keep your short hair from boring out?

RaVaughn: I color it a lot! I wear my hair depending on how I feel at the beginning of the day – it might be a bang [or] slicked back.

Clutch: What are some trends you’re into at the moment? Any lip colors you’re rocking for the summer season?

RaVaughn: My great friend Adrienne Bailon just released her fingernail polish line that I’m loving. It’s called Fingertip Fetish – the first line is based off of New York City such as “Hail a Cab” for yellow. She related every color of the line to different NYC staples. As far as lip colors, I’m definitely into Ruby Woo from MAC, Candy Yum Yum by MAC as well. For my every day lip, it’s C-Thru also by MAC.

Clutch: You’re from L.A. Has the city’s iconic style influenced your personal look at all?

RaVaughn: It definitely has. When I go places, people say “You’re from LA, aren’t you?” We don’t have seasons so [that enables] me to wear whatever I want whenever I want.

Clutch: Since you’re always in the public eye, there is always that pressure to staying fit. How do you tackle maintaining your figure?

RaVaughn: Not eating what I really want like French fries and ice cream and paying my enemy a visit every once in a while: the gym.

Clutch: If we were to invade your closet, what is one piece of item you can’t live without accessorizing into your wardrobe?

RaVaughn: There isn’t one piece but overall, I would die without my everyday key jewelry pieces and a leather jacket. My key jewelry pieces are earrings and rings.

Clutch: How is your style reflective to who you are as a person and an artist?

RaVaughn: My style represents my personality. I’m every woman. I’m crazy, sexy and cool.

I love me some Rhonda

We’ll call her Rhonda.
Rhonda is one of many old and faithful dress forms on the floor of my university’s fashion department. And because she’s a little different from the rest of the dressforms, Rhonda happens to be my very best friend.

See, Rhonda’s a size 20, which roughly translates into US dress size 16. Which — yay! — is exactly what I am.

So whenever a special occasion calls for me to construct my own dress, or if I’m just feeling bored (read: avoiding actual class assignments) and just want to throw together a casual top, I wheel Rhonda over to my workspace and begin gleefully pinning fabric to her sturdy body. This, for some reason, always confuses people.

“What are you doing?” a faculty member or another student might say.

“You’re not the same size as that form. She’s too big for you!” (Body-positive as I try to be, I always take this as a compliment.)

Thing is, they’re right. But they’re also wrong. Rhonda *is* the same size as me — our bust, waist and hip measurements are all identical. But that’s where our similarities end, because everything on our bodies are distributed differently. Rhonda has modest b-cups (like almost every other dress form), while my 34 Gs are barely contained by my Cacique bras.

And even though my shoulders are wide (thanks dad), Rhonda’s are considerably broader. My hips are higher, my armhole size is smaller, oh, and most importantly — Rhonda has no ass at all. NONE. At all. It doesn’t serve me much purpose to try to design a skirt for my yam sandwich on her.

So, as much as I adore Rhonda, whenever I create something on her to wear myself, a ton of alterations are inevitably involved. Sweet as she is, Rhonda’s nothing but a scaled-up version of the many size 8 (dress size 4, a standard sample size) dress forms that populate the fashion department. And while the size 8 forms are fine for making clothes for fit models, manufacturers seem to have forgotten that the human body just doesn’t “scale up” in uniform increments when it gets larger.

Thankfully, a pair of enterprising students in the fashion program at Cornell are seeking to correct this dress form injustice. They’ve developed a dress form for a size 24 woman that takes into account the many variations of the human body. Their process for doing so was pretty cool: Instead of working from a basic form, they used thousands of 3D body scans (of actual humans!) to develop a body prototype, and then matched that to a size 24 woman in their department.

The result — a pear-shaped form that will lend itself to more easily developing flattering plus-size garments, so that the curvier among us are aren’t stuck with boxy T-shirts or ill-fitting pants.

The students at Cornell used the dress form to design a four-piece collection, and even developed a marketing plan for their line. That’s exciting, but I think it would make an even greater impact to figure out how to manufacture and sell the forms instead, or maybe even the technology to create them.

I haven’t worked in industry yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the obstacles to developing great plus-clothing was the fact that transferring garments from dress form to fit model (then to customer) involves tons of fitting and altering and adjusting. (And, as my professors like to say around here, “Time is money.”) Wouldn’t it be great if ALL those companies had access to a form that more accurately represents the average U.S. woman, who is holding A LOT of buying power?

Still, the project doesn’t solve all the woes of the would-be plus fashionista.

Are you addicted to retail therapy? The Huffington Post recently performed a survey of 1,000 U.S. residents online and found that 1 out of 3 Americans shop to relieve stress. That statistic accounts for 91% of the general population.

Women are also more inclined to shop away anxiety than men. “[The survey] found that women were twice as likely as men to use retail therapy as a way to cope with stress (40 percent vs. 19 percent). And in turn, men were more than twice as likely as women (34 percent vs. 16 percent) to say that they had never shopped out of stress and would never consider doing so in the future.”

Shopping when stressed can become just as much of an addiction as drugs, food or alcohol. Shopping releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals in your brain, when you make a purchase and bring home a new item. But like most temporary mood lifters, shopping can easily turn sour leading to issues like hoarding, credit card debt and financial instability.

What’s worse? Shopping while in a state of depression or anxiety can cause you to make bigger purchases than you would when you are calm and thinking rationally. And shopping via technology (iPads, iPhones and laptops) makes it easier and more convenient to shop with abandon.

Shopper Darleen Meier told HuffPost Women in 2011: ”"It was so easy to lose track of how much I was spending. At the high point, I was getting boxes delivered to my doorstep every single day of the week. It was time to stage an intervention.”

Meier is not alone as many women find online shopping even more addictive (and delivery workers can vouch for it).

Three young women faced every daughter’s nightmare when their mother passed away from cancer. Before her passing, her children, Makia Underwood, 32, Zakia Clark, 29, and Tasha Clark, 27, began to wear hats and shirts that read “F— Cancer.” The “C” in “F—” is replaced by a breast cancer awareness ribbon. It was their way of addressing a disease that they watched steal their mother from them. “That’s how we feel,” Zakia Clark told Philly.com. “It took our mom away. It’s a demon. It’s the devil. There are no other words you can use to explain how you feel. You want cancer to get cancer and die.”

Their passionate stance against cancer got them in trouble. Zakia and Tasha were kicked out of King of Prussia Mall for wearing their “F— Cancer” hats last Sunday.

Philly.com reports:

The ladies had just sat down when a security guard approached them and, without a greeting, ordered: “‘Take your hats off.” Zakia took hers off, but Tasha, who once worked at the mall, told the guard she wanted to see something in writing. It was almost as if Tasha were channeling their mother’s strong spirit, Zakia said, and it inspired her to put her own hat back on.

“He said, ‘Since you don’t want to take your hat off, you can leave my mall,” Zakia recalled. “He stood there while we ate and threatened to call the cops.” [...] As the group was escorted to the mall office, Makia called and met up with them. Once they got to the office, the women were met by an Upper Merion Township police officer, who had been called to the mall by security guards.

“The officer said, ‘I find it offensive that you even have that hat that says ‘F— CANCER,’ ” Zakia said. “He said, ‘It’s their mall, they want you out, you have to get out.’ The women were escorted out, and two security cars were waiting for them at their car just to make sure they left, Zakia said.”

When news outlets began looking into the incident, a spokesman for the company that owns King of Prussia Mall, Les Morris, called Zakia to apologize.

He told the People Paper: “Certainly this could have been handled in a much more empathic and sensitive manner. We’re very sorry about her loss and wanted to apologize for the way her party was treated.”

He added: “I do think this is an entirely different situation than a 16-year-old kid with a swear word on his T-shirt cruising the mall. We need to be empathic, sympathetic, and listen and make sure that we’re approaching each situation as it comes up.”

Zakia accepted Morris’ apology and in good faith, the daughters changing a planned protest at the mall entrance into an awareness rally about cancer.

The caffeine helps reduce some of the edema around the fat, by tightening blood vessels, increasing blood flow, and the antioxidants fight wrinkles.

Opinions were divided about whether the Dolce & Gabbana Blackamoor-inspired earrings were racist. The earrings were essentially a headless female figurine wearing a scarf and heavy gold jewelry, and many linked the image with offensive stereotypes of black womanhood.

As controversial as the runway jewelry was, the concept has trickled down to mass retailers. Zara is now selling a necklace composed of dark-skinned faces and bright red lips flanked by gold faces. The bauble mimics minstrel caricatures and stereotypical images meant to lampoon slaves.

It was brought to national attention when Amanda Seales (formerly Amanda Diva) posted it on her social media accounts after spotting the necklace at the Zara store in Times Square. It was then reported by Huffington Post. Seales’ initial post drew outrage among commenters, who called it “shameful” and linked it to “Sambo and blackface,” while others failed to see the racial significance.

Solange Knowles wields a considerable amount of freedom in her career, look and love life. Whether she’s DJing for a fashion party, traveling with her son Julez or singing about lost love to an upbeat tune, you get the idea that Solange plays the game by her own rules.

The beauty, who covers Complex Magazine‘s June/July 2013 issue, reveals why she’s fought so hard to be independent in her fashion choices and her career as a music artist via Glamazons Blog:

On becoming fearless in fashion at an early age:
One day, she wore a “full-on Native American outfit” to Will Rogers Elementary School in Houston. “I had my own little quirks as a child,” Solange says. “I had a very vivid imagination, mostly through my style and fashion choices. The kids had a lot to say.” Her fourth-grade teacher, Miss Bethann, found Solange on the verge of tears in her Pocahontas costume outside of the classroom and gave her a lesson that stuck with her: “Don’t you ever, ever bend or break because of who you are.”

On loving Houston’s hip hop scene:
At 20, she moved back home after splitting with her husband and “wil’ed out for a little while,” she says, finally breaking free from the confines of her teenage years. “Houston’s hip-hop scene was in the forefront,” Solange recalls. “I remember going to all of these shows: Paul Wall, Bun B, Mike Jones, Slim Thug. I enjoyed the freedom and the newness of experiencing people and a world that I had not had much access to.”

On the challenges she faces as an indie artist:
Being indie has taken its toll, but Solange seems to embrace the challenge. She explains how she pooled her own frequent-flier miles with her mom’s to fly a crew to Cape Town, South Africa, to shoot the “Losing You” video. “It’s an independent label, so with that creative independence comes some financial independence,” she says, laughing. “I had to get very creative with how I was gonna pull it all together. Having an intimate team makes you much more resourceful. It comes out the way you want it to, and there’s not a committee of thinkers and observers.”

On an upcoming album and living life on her own terms:
“Someone asked me, ‘What quarter are you trying to come out?’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, I haven’t heard that in so long!’” Solange cracks up at the thought. She says she’s looking forward to working on her full-length album with Hynes, but isn’t pressed. “It’s just about putting the music out when it’s ready. When I wake up in the morning, I get dressed for myself, I listen to what I wanna listen to, I make decisions for me. It’s been interesting to navigate that from such a young age so publicly. But life is short and you have to live for you. I would never wanna look back on my life and feel like I missed out on any of that.”

Her lease on life is so inspiring in a business where most artists profit by being inauthentic. From Solange’s natural hair to her unconventional sound, her willingness to be unique and true to herself has truly paid off.

Nelly has long been a fan of urban modeling. He’s the rapper behind the famous credit card swipe down a video model’s derrière and hosts a annual competition with his clothing brand, Apple Bottoms, for the nicest, err, apple. In an interview with VLAD TV, he was asked what he thought about the stigma of urban modeling. He responded:

“At the end of the day, it’s still modeling. It’s a different type of modeling [...] but its not a high-end form of modeling. When Hugh [Hefner] first started Playboy, some people frowned upon it. But then Playboy became a part of America. Everybody went to Playboy mansion parties: politicians, members of clergy, movie stars. It didn’t mean that everybody thought it was right. It’s kind of like alcohol. Everybody didn’t appreciate alcohol when it first came out. Then, it became the American way.”

His logic might seem flawed to most, but he does raise an interesting point about the stigma of urban modeling versus that of Playboy, GQ, Maxim and other businesses that feature women in suggestive poses and revealing clothes. Are those establishments accepted more because they’ve been around longer? Is it a race or class issue that gives urban modeling its stigma?

The mixed print sensation we’ve seen on Michelle Obama and Solange Knowles isn’t going anywhere this Spring. The vibrant trend goes hand-in-hand with the many prints that have gained popularity this season from stripes to polka dots to florals.

Some of the best mixed print outfits give the allusion that you can throw on all your favorite printed pieces and create a visually stunning, cohesive look. But there is a method to mixing patterns.

Here are some tips for mixing and matching patterns to great effect:

1. Larger Prints with Smaller Prints

Scale is the key to mixing similar prints, including a popular combination: animal print on animal print. An example, according to Refinery29, is to mix a classic leopard print top with a larger, more graphic version of the same pattern.

2. Shared Color

Color is a great connector for two varying prints, reports Glamazons Blog. If a grid print top and floral print skirt share a color like red, they’ll be complimentary when mixed together.

3. Treat Stripes like a Neutral

Online retailer eshakti identifies stripes as the easiest print to mix. Stripes act as a neutral that plays off bolder and louder patterns well. You can combine stripes with florals, polka dots, graphic prints, geometric prints, animal print and more.

4. Same Color Family

Glamazons Blog shares a great rule of thumb when trying out mixed prints for the first time: sticking to the same color family. A black and white polka dot skirt with a black and white floral top are a foul-proof way to nail the mixed print look.

Why are magazines still using blackface?

Countless editorials have come under fire for reenacting the racist and archaic practice yet magazines continue to implement it.

The latest offender is Vogue Netherlands Magazine for its “Heritage Heroes,” editorial in the May 2013 issue. The shoot pays homage to Marc Jacob’s designs for Louis Vuitton with each look capturing the inspiration behind one of his collections.

To tribute his Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 collections, inspired by Josephine Baker and Grace Jones respectively, white model Querelle Jansen is featured in blackface with wigs to resemble textured hair. Was this the best way to channel these African-American legends?

According to Fashionista, “a caption from the editorial translates to “This collection is inspired by the style of the Parisian showgirl Josephine Baker, mixed with tribal influences.”

Sure it would’ve been easier to hire a black model for those shots, but why go through the trouble when you can dress a white model as a caricature of two African-American cultural icons? Insert sarcasm.

It’s hard to tell whether Vogue Netherlands ‘s blackface shoot was motivated by a need for attention or plain old ignorance. Blackface is almost commonplace in Dutch culture as they are known for their highly-offensive “Black Pete” tradition which continues to this day.

Janelle Monáe’s style can be described as flawless and simplistic. From her natural hair styles, to her dewy faced make-up, she takes ‘chic’ to a whole new level. Janelle’s signature style from the start has always been her black and white ensembles. Many people have wondered about the reasoning behind her ever present tuxedo pants and jackets, others have just accepted it as her own unique form of expression.

In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Monáe explained the symbolism behind her style. 

“It’s a dedication to uniformity and I’m a minimalist by heart, but a lot of it had to do with me wanting to have a uniform like the working class, like my mom and my grandmother,” Monáe told The Huffington Post.

“My grandmother had 16 sisters and brothers and they all had to share one pair of shoes,” Monáe explained. “And so that’s the family that I come from — I don’t ever want to be detached from that. I use it as motivation for my music and to just keep me centered, grounded and to stay on message,” Monáe said.

Monáe is currently on the cover of this month’s Essence, and recently celebrated the accomplishment at a party in New York City, where she was honored with a framed copy of the magazine. During her speech, expressed gratitude for being chosen for the cover.

“This didn’t have to be my life,” Monáe said as tears filled her eyes. “I’m genuinely moved and touched,” she added and paused again after becoming overwhelmed with emotion.

“There are lots of beautiful young women of color out there who would look just as gorgeous or even more gorgeous on this cover and for you guys to see something in me — and for my story to connect in a way that you allowed me to tell and have this platform to tell my story to your readers, is just something I won’t take for granted,” she said.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on First Lady Michelle Obama’s style. While Sunday Times Magazine praises her sartorial savvy with a cover and the title of best-dressed, not every designer sings her praises — especially when she doesn’t wear their brand.

Oscar de la Renta is the latest to come forward after Vivienne Westwood and Karl Lagerfeld‘s less-than-favorable assessments of FLOTUS’ look. Mr. de la Renta, who has been a favorite of First Ladies like Laura Bush as well as the wife of losing Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, revealed why he won’t be dressing Mrs. Obama anytime soon:

“It is a relation that began poorly and I think it will end the same way.”

Mrs. Obama prefers to support designers like Rachel Roy, Tracy Reese, Jason Wu and Duro Olowu, and mix high and low with mass retail brands like H&M, J.Crew and ASOS.

Despite her obvious appeal to fashion enthusiasts and widely-reported ability to sell out a garment with a single wear, Oscar de la Renta believes he’s better off focusing on the “everyday woman”:

“An anonymous woman on the street is the woman who influences fashion today, not a movie star or a first lady.”

Tell that to all the people clamoring to dress Mrs. Obama and all of Hollywood.

This isn’t the designer’s first time chiding FLOTUS. He also spoke out when she wore European designers while visiting Europe, as it it’s some kind of crime.

While I’m sure Mr. de la Renta’s comments don’t hold much weight to FLOTUS, I find it shocking that so many designers feel compelled to speak openly about their distaste for her style or strained relationship with her. I don’t recall such conversations being had about other First Ladies but perhaps because of the chorus of voices praising Mrs. Obama, a few feel the need to voice their discontent.

What do you think of Oscar de la Renta’s comments and the very vocal critiques of Mrs. Obama’s style in general?

If “The Face” model contestant, Devyn Abdullah, believes her “international look” will let her skip classification as “a black model,” she is in for a rude awakening. Jourdan Dunn, a supermodel whose covered Vogue Italia, fronted Burberry and YSL campaigns and closed out the Olympics, is lauded for her almond-shaped eyes that “look almost Chinese” and yet she regularly experiences racism in the industry.

She recounts a scenario for Net-a-Porter’s The Edit Magazine that’s almost reminiscent of the Jim Crow era in which a makeup artist won’t work on her because of her black skin:

Not just a model then, but an icon in the making, up there, as she is, with that embarrassingly small clutch of black women – Chanel Iman, Joan Smalls and Liya Kebede among them – who have made it all the way to the top.

There were times, however, when Dunn would be on her way to castings and told to turn back because the client “didn’t want any more black girls”. There was even one instance when a makeup artist announced on a shoot that she didn’t want to make-up Dunn’s face because she herself was white and Dunn was black.

Despite those racially-charged challenges, the single mother continues to persevere due to inspiration from her mother:

The model admits that in the past, discrimination like this has upset her, but a tremendous sense of self-belief, instilled in her by her mother, has always seen her through. “I grew up wanting to be my mom,” she says now. “She always seemed to make things work without ever complaining. She whips me into shape.”

Her strategy seems to be working in her favor as she continues to rank in accomplishments in her career: she is the first black model to appear on the Prada Runway since Naomi Campbell 11 years earlier and she won Model Of The Year at the British Fashion Awards. On the heels of making her second appearance on the cover of Vogue, Michelle Obama has another fashion accomplishment bestowed upon her. Britain’s Sunday Times Style Magazine recently crowned the Flotus as “fashion royalty”, and ranked Obama on the top of their best dressed list.

As part of the magazine’s promotion, an ad was released featuring a profile of Obama wearing a crown on a British first-class postage stamp, reminiscent of the Queen of England.

“I always say that women should wear whatever makes them feel good about themselves,” is what Michelle told Vogue. “That’s what I always try to do.”

We often discuss and analyze the crisis of racism in fashion but it’s infinitely harder to arrive at solutions that can have a significant and lasting impact on the industry. One way to combat white-washed runways is to produce our own shows: productions that speak to a multicultural audience and employ models and designers of various ethnic backgrounds. BET’s “Rip The Runway” aims to do just that. The 2013 edition of the popular show premiered on BET yesterday evening to rave reviews. Clutch was invited to speak with the producing agency behind “RTR,” Balan Inc., about their vision for “Rip The Runway” and diversity in fashion in general.

Q: What do you think black productions like “Rip The Runway” mean for the fashion world?

A: Although this show is a mix of fashion and music, it is still one of the largest black fashion shows that is syndicated nationally. We think it’s a great opportunity to expose black designers, models, and musicians, and bring their talents to the forefront, through national television exposure.

Q: How important was it to choose a diverse group of models and designers?

A: It’s extremely important. As far as racial diversity, we wanted to give minorities a chance to have better exposure. We wanted to give both established and up and coming designers [of color] national exposure by including them in the show.

Q: There were 7 different segments including Size Sexy, Red Carpet and more. How did you visualize the transitions for each look?

A: We wanted to capture all the types of lifestyles, and activities, that one would encounter. Everything from going on vacation to attending a red carpet event. [We] basically [took] an over all lifestyle approach.

Q: How important is it to acknowledge the trends in African-American culture off the runway when producing an all-black fashion production?

A: Its important because most of the viewers are African-American [so] bringing something the viewers can relate to is important, and we tried our best to do that.

Q: Seeing as how there are limited black runway shows being televised, what do you hope to achieve when the show airs?

A: We hope to bring awareness about how important fashion is to black culture. Fashion and looking good is important in our community and we show that in “Rip The Runway.” We hope to give higher visibility to minority models, designers and stylists. Since there isn’t a ton of diversity during Fashion Week, we hoped to make up for the lack of diversity with our production.

Balan, Inc. worked beside BET Networks and industry legend Bethann Hardison to cast a show of beautiful, talented models and from Chasity Saunders to Bria Murphy, we were impressed with the talent. It was also great to see designers of colors flaunt their innovative and over-the-top creations on a national stage.

By now, the statistics don’t even shock us anymore. Approximately 90% of the models in Fall 2013 runway shows across the world were white, and more white models were cast than in previous seasons. When supermodels like Chanel Iman talk about expressly being turned down from shows because designers “already have one black model,” the numbers aren’t exactly surprising. But we rarely get insight from fashion insiders in the casting business about why the runways remain white-washed. Buzz Feed writer James Lim spoke to the top five casting directors to learn why diversity on the runway is so hard to achieve.

James Scully, Tom Ford casting director, attributes the problem to limited visions and direction from stylists:

“[The problem comes from] a mixture of things. The stylist has a lot of say, though. Obviously, the blame can’t be put on the stylist alone, but the designer is taking the cue from somebody. I just think it’s weird how people are constantly saying, “But it’s about who the girl is and her character.” A fashion show is not a storybook. A great model is a great model, and no matter who she is, she can take on any role. I don’t understand why only white girls could be that sort of gin-soaked boozy girl in Louis Vuitton this season. A character can be multicultural. We live in a multicultural world. At this point, it’s almost irresponsible not to represent that on the runway. I have millions of friends from all over the world, and if they don’t seen themselves in the product, they don’t buy it.

Jennifer Starr, who serves as the casting director for Ralph Lauren, GAP and more, believes designers simply cast their favorites and can’t be faulted for that:

“I have to say that I am always aware of [diversity], as I feel it’s part of my job to try and make the runways a bit more representative of our societal makeup. Some designers are not paying attention to being inclusive and just cast woman they love, which they really cannot be criticized for. I do think casting directors have a responsibility to have the conversation, elevate awareness, and find their clients the best models out there for them, regardless of ethnicity.”

John Pfeiffer, who casts for such designers as Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg and Donna Karan, said he makes a point to diverge from the homogeneous (read: all white) look many casting directors, stylists and designers espouse:

“Diversity is extremely important. You have to make an effort to have diversity in your casting. You really have to work at it; push yourself and push the designers to be diverse and more inclusive. When casting for the runway, you want the models selected to be cohesive as a group both in mood and spirit. That being said, I’m not the kind of casting director that goes for a homogeneous aesthetic. Maybe that look works for certain shows, but I generally find it to be bland and boring. Also, I want to see my own race represented on the runway and in images.”

Barbara Nicoli and Leila Annana, who cast for Burberry, Marchesa and Gucci, had an interesting take on diversity in the runway. Nicoli said:

“Sometimes what I disagree with is putting a black girl [in a show] just because you need diversity. I love black girls. I’m a big fan of Joan Smalls. I would really like to put her in every casting, but sometimes she’s not right for some castings and she’s much better in others. This kind of diversity is fair and good, but it’s also true that sometimes I notice with other casts, it’s like they were forced to put someone in because they have to.”

Annana seemed to echo Nicoli’s point-of-view, saying:

“We think we need to keep in mind that these are shows. A show needs to make you dream, and it doesn’t necessarily need to represent reality.”

I think what’s most fascinating about these interviews is that few solutions are offered in the way of increasing diversity. As long as designers and brands aren’t hit in their pockets, there isn’t much incentive to challenge the status quo.

It feels like every other day a celebrity is using their brand to launch a clothing line from Kanye West’s much talked about collections to Rihanna’s designs for River Island. Angela Simmons stunned many when she announced her clothing line today by revealing her Spring/Summer 2013 collection on her website.

Her clothing line is garnering rave reviews for its expert construction and tailoring and its youthful, modern look. Chic pieces like a turtleneck with an open back straddle the line between unstudied cool and brazen sex appeal while sporty outfits like sweatpants with knee patches worn with heels are both masculine and feminine.

Though comparisons to Alexander Wang abound, “Angela by Angela Simmons” seems organic and unique to Angela. Her personal style, which can be sassy, playful and edgy, seems to inform the direction of the line.

Åhléns, a clothing store in Sweden, is shaking things up in the retail industry with their full-figured mannequins, which went viral on Facebook last week. The mannequins aren’t abnormally thin and tall like most standard types, but are shaped to resemble a full-figured body type, in purple bras and boy shorts no less.

The post garnered over 50,000 likes in a few short days, revealing that consumers are hungry for mannequins that reflect their body shape and size.

Some people are making the claim that US brands should follow suit as our country has a troubled history with mannequins. They are generally skinny and lithe and sometimes “six sizes taller and smaller than the average person,” says the Chicago Tribune.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are plus-size mannequins which cater to a powerful and lucrative market but rarely any mannequins that speak to women who fall somewhere in the middle. The closest I’ve seen to a full-figured mannequin outside of a plus size store are those in urban shops that have fuller butts to show off denim jeans. Beyond those, most mannequins resemble high fashion runway models rather than the everyday women who make up the consumer base.

There’s an exciting crop of black supermodels emerging, and 22 year-old Chanel Iman is arguably on the top of the list. Iman has modeled for Victoria’s Secret, GAP, DKNY and Ralph Lauren, and appeared on the covers of Teen Vogue, Italian Elle, i-D Magazine and more. She is the youngest black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue, and only the third black model to have done so. It’s interesting to hear that even she is faced with blocked opportunities and closed doors due to racism when she encounters designers who believe one black model is more than enough.

She told The Sunday Times Magazine:

“I appreciate designers making a strong statement that black women are beautiful. Black women like fashion. And when there’s more diversity on the runway, it makes our world more inclusive.”

When asked if fashion has a problem with race, she says:

“Yeah, most definitely. A few times I got excused by designers who told me ‘we already found one black girl. We don’t need you anymore.’ I felt very discouraged. When someone tells you, ‘we don’t want you because we already have one of your kind, it’s really sad.”

Though Chanel expressed she was proud to be include in Vogue Italia’s legendary All-Black issue, saying “it was a moment for everyone, [black] or not,” The Sunday Times Magazine notes that critics pointed out the 30% increase that issue saw in advertising relied mainly on campaigns with white models. That disconnect between the black faces featured in the magazine and those starring in ads is due to racism as well, according to famed photographer Steven Meisel. He said at the time: “I’ve asked my advertising clients so many times, ‘Can we use a black girl?’ They say No. Advertisers say black models don’t sell.”

That sad reality proves that racism in fashion is an enduring problem. It’s important that successful models like Chanel Iman use their platform and lend their voices to make the chorus against discrimination that much stronger.

Adding to the great list of people who’ve commented on First Lady Michelle Obama’s clothes to a wide, Mrs. O loving audience who doesn’t give a rip is designer Vivienne Westwood.

I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her. Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That’s what fashion is there for. It’s there to help, not just to make you look more conservative.

Oh. OK.

My theory is always the designers who “hate”  Mrs. O’s fashion are the one’s Mrs.O doesn’t wear. Oscar de La Renta famously threw a fit after being the go-to guy for several First Lady’s and Mrs. O had the gall to wear European designers when she visited Europe. But Mrs. Obama has mostly preferred ready-to-wear by lines such as White House Black Market, J. Crew and many designers of color, like Thankoon, Jason Wu and Tracey Reese.

Mrs. Obama largely wears lesser known American designers and buys from American labels, so all this is really a bunch of shaaaaaade from designers who know Mrs. O is a style icon and bristle at not getting to be part of this All-American fashion party by virtue of their pricey, European status.

Fashion, as in the high art end of fashion, is supposed to be aspirational. The First Lady is tall, built like an Amazonian and highly aspirational, yet she doesn’t deign to wear their rags so instead of “getting it” (she’s an American, our economy is crappy, so she’s buying American, besides … um …  it’s her life. First Lady does what she wants to do), they’ve chosen the sour grapes route.

You’re already rich. You got Lady Gaga to wear you stuff. Let it go, honey. Your privilege is showing.

Everyone has an opinion on Fashion’s Night Out, which was initiated in 2009 as a way to encourage consumers to shop during the economic slump. The supportive crowd feels it’s a great way for fashion enthusiasts to mingle with celebrities, frequent their favorite retail haunts and enjoy free champagne while detractors complain about the large crowds and the fact that no one buys anything…ever.

The setbacks to the citywide event were widely reported after mobs of fans chased Anna Wintour and Kanye West down small city streets in 2011. A year later, cops were enlisted to contain the growing mobs while stores saw little to no increase in revenue.

This week, the sponsors of “Fashion’s Night Out” announced a hiatus, leading us to believe they’re paying attention to all the criticism. Via Glamazons Blog:

“The sponsors of the event—Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Co.—made the joint decision to go on hiatus so retailers and designers can focus their budgets on projects that are more in line with their specific objectives, rather than a big event on one night in September.”

It’s interesting they mention budgets and objectives because one of the most resounding complaints was the exorbitant cost of producing Fashion’s Night Out events and the small return on investment.

While the fashion lovers who enjoyed star-sightings and free cocktails will surely miss the festivities, others are happy to see it come to an end.

From the colorless cover of Vanity Fair‘s Hollywood issue to the infrequent covers featuring black women on Vogue Magazine, it’s clear that racial diversity is just not a priority to several top publications despite the varied ethnic backgrounds of their readers. T Magazine now joins the pantheon of white-washed magazines as the first issue edited by incoming editor Deborah Needleman was devoid of a single model or subject of color. Once the lack of diversity was brought to Needleman’s attention, she offered this explanation:

It was something I noticed and regretted as we were putting the issue together. We are a global magazine and so would like the content , subjects and geography of stories to reflect that. In coming issues, we cover the people and places of Seoul, São Paulo, Kenya, Bollywood actors, Nigeria, etc. A majority of fashion models are still unfortunately mostly white, but it is our aim to celebrate quality and beauty in all its diverse forms. We can and will aim to do better, but our goal is first and foremost to deliver the best stories we find, and it is my belief that quality and good journalism appeal to all of us regardless of our specific ethnic origins.

Her statement is interesting. Though a global perspective is a welcome change, why would she need to leave the U.S. to add more color to T Magazine‘s pages? And do magazines get a pass for not including models of different backgrounds since the majority of working models are white?

Some agree with her logic but I still believe magazine editors and publishers could easily achieve diversity if it was important to them. What are your thoughts, Clutchettes?

On Saturday, Rihanna joined the ranks of designers showing at London Fashion Week with her first collection for UK retailer, River Island. After a late start, the room filled with editors, celebrities and photographers watched as models took the stage in ’90s grunge-inspired floor-length tank dresses with high slits, crop tops and pencil skirts, loose-fitting jumpsuits and curve-hugging maxi skirts. The response has been negative from several members of the fashion press, including one scathing article in The Daily Beast which called the clothes “porny” and “hideous.” It also included this quip:

Similarly, if you were a guy hoping for a one night stand and a girl started chatting to you in a bar wearing anything from the Rihanna for River Island collection, you could feel fair confident you’d be getting lucky. The only lingering uncertainty in your mind would be whether or not she would take a credit card.

Some feel the harsh reception is due to backlash from the influx of celebrity designers. London Fashion Week, which provides a platform to such brilliant artisans as Mary Katrantzou and Christopher Bailey of Burberry, isn’t the place for a famous singer without design experience or a fully-developed point-of-view.

Still, to call the clothes “hideous” and befitting of a prostitute seems unfair. Rihanna’s collection is for River Island, a mass UK retailer who would be less likely to encourage fashion-forward designs and more compelled to push out wearable clothes that will sell in the market.

Furthermore, it caters to her Rihanna’s base and the River Island consumer. The pieces are earmarked for the fun, young and sassy consumer who is drawn to flirty pieces that show a little skin. See her full collection here.

Solange Knowles has truly carved her own path not just as a fashion darling but also as a musician. Her latest album “True,” was praised for its musicality, intricate melodies, beautiful harmonies and deep lyrical content. Much like her fashion sense, which includes an affinity for mixed prints and patterned suits, her sound is very unique, evolved and authentic to her personality. She opens up about her music and how it reflects her personal growth to The Fader for the cover story of their Spring style issue.

On finding a balance between career and motherhood:

“In all aspects of my career, simplicity is so key. I think it has a lot to do with how much the quality of my life has improved since Julez started school, which pretty much implemented a schedule and a lifestyle that revolves around a nine-to-five hour.”

On how her music reflects her artistic growth:

[In] four years, there’s been so much artistic growth, so much growth just as a woman in [my] 20s, but especially as an artist. You’re exposed to so much more from age 21 to 26, and you sure as hell care a lot less. It’s been a little weird, for me, getting feedback—the last album was so different than this one. I am like, Yeah, I was 20 when I started writing it. Is that supposed to be shocking? If it sounded similar, that would be really strange.”

The Grammys producers tried their hardest, but nothing was stopping celebrities from showing off their assets on the red carpet yesterday evening. Whether in sultry form-fitting sequin gowns or sheer cut-out dresses that left little to the imagination, the theme of the night was uninhibited sex appeal.

While the music kept us thoroughly entertained (Bob Marley tribute! Justin Timberlake!) and the awards disappointed, our focus was mainly on the fashion and beauty. Every hairstyle was represented from the low ponytail to the beautiful, billowing ‘fro. And where we had pegged some stars as safe, they truly surprised us by thinking outside the box and taking adventurous risks.

Though looks varied from pantsuits to gowns with sexy slits, there was a common theme among the attendees: skin (and shapes) are in!

Solange wowed in a Ralph and Russo Couture emerald sequin gown which complimented her glamorous full afro and Christian Louboutin Pigalles Spikes pumps.


Kelly Rowland turned heads in a Georges Chakra Couture gown with sheer cut-out panels that showed off her beautiful curves.


Rihanna surprised us all with a full head of honey blonde waves and an eye-catching Azzedine Alaia gown in a fiery red hue.


Beyoncé took a huge risk on the red carpet in an Osman Yousefzada white and black pantsuit which she complimented with a red lip and a low blonde ponytail.


Jennifer Lopez kept all eyes on her in a one-shoulder black Anthony Vaccarello gown with a daring thigh-high slit.


Alicia Keys showed off her toned upper body in an Azzedine Alaia dress that had a criss-cross bodice and a curve-hugging fit.


Ashanti drew attention in a bold Tony Ward Couture ballgown with a keyhole neckline and high slit.


Esperanza Spalding embraced the popular print-on-print trend in a colorful digital pattern gown and matching blazer.


Estelle looked radiant in a Love Collins printed long sleeve crop top and mermaid hem skirt.


Janelle Monae went for a variation on her classic black and white looks with a three-piece Moschino tuxedo and top hat.

This week, Grammy producers released a strict and detailed epistle addressing the guidelines for all nominees and guests to wear to yesterday’s show. The gist of the letter is demanding all attendees to hide cracks, side boobs and to halt all overly-raunchy antics! BORING!

Aren’t the outfit surprises what we’ve come to love about the Grammys? The awards show is home to some of fashion’s most memorable moments from Jennifer Lopez’s infamous racy low cut floral gown (that I still aim to mimic at some point in my life) and Pink’s daring see-through bodysuit. Even Lil Kim’s custom-made nipple cover made history. It’s entertainment and outrageous fashion is a vital part of the shock factor celebrities love to exploit. Dear CBS, the people want fashion shockers.

Here’s why their new policy proved to be a failure:

1. You can’t have The Grammys without outrageous fashion.

The Grammys is the vessel for two great worlds to collide: music and fashion. Yes viewers are captivated by a night of great musical acknowledgment but there’s also just as excited to see bold fashion statements on the red carpet.

Grammy artists are notorious for their raunchy half-naked red carpet risks and even their costume mishaps. The more daring and yes, sometimes risque the look, the more it’s likely to get tongues wagging. It contributes to the uncensored, organic and free-spirited energy of the Grammys. How can they tame that when it’s such a vital part of the appeal of the show?

2. No one listened.

CBS was more likely to cause a slight uproar due to the militant style enforcements than to have the masses surrender agreeably. Musicians typically do not take well to being told what to do and what to wear. These are the world’s biggest rock stars and bad asses: the ones who have attained their high profile careers by singing “screw what I’m told” songs and glorifying their rebellious lifestyles. Why did CBS think they’d actually follow the rules? In fact, the demand backfired, nudging stars to pull their raciest number yet (we’re talking to you Kelly Rowland and Alicia Keys).

3. “You can’t make me!”

CBS had no way to actually enforce these rules.  Yes, in essence, they could drag performers off the red carpet or from stage for a flying boob AND even have security physically put a WWF smack down on an artist to the ground for showing too much skin but none of that happened.

4. It was sexist!

Since the female artists were coerced into covering up, the same rules should have applied to the men. We weren’t allowed to see Rihanna’s side boob but could have been subjected to a topless Rick Ross. That isn’t hardly fair.

Miu Miu is blowing us away! The Italian fashion brand enlisted award-winning director Ava Duvernay to shoot “The Door,” the fifth part of their Musings short series.

The nine minute film features some of our favorites: Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Adepero Oduye and Goapele.

The short muses fashion with themes of sisterhood and resilience. It zeroes in on a literal door in the home of the main character (Gabrielle Union) and shows friends coming in through the door to comfort her after a breakup until she finds the strength to move on. Ava Duvernay says: “The door in the film represents a pathway to who we are.”

They call New York City the concrete jungle, but this month the Big Apple will be become more of a fashion jungle as one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, Fashion Week, kicks into high gear. Year after year fashion experts and aficionados alike watch to see which designers are kicking it up a notch and adding a little creative flair to their runway launch. This year one of the designer’s to watch is English-born shoe designer and CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award finalist Tabitha Simmons.

To debut her 2013 resort collection Simmons created a video that captures her collection of shoes in motion, in midair, to be precise. The concept behind her video is simple, she wanted to bring her shoes to life in a way that really captured the New York vibe and for Simmons double dutch was the perfect way to do it. In her video, the camera zooms in on members of the National Double Dutch League, who show off their fancy double dutch skills, and of course, Simmons’ cute shoes. According to Simmons:

“I really wanted to have my shoe come to life, and be in action, so I thought it would be great to a find a ‘New York’ vibe. New York women are very busy. I’m a mother of two, work, juggle a career, and try to be a mother, and everyone seems to be in a rush, which is something I respond to. My shoes are a lifestyle, for women that want to look sexy, but also want something for the weekend.”

Simmons will be showcasing the shoes shown in the video, and other styles, this Friday alongside fellow CFDA/Vogue winners at New York’s Milk Studios.

The aesthetic employs the preppy grid trend in inventive ways on swingy skirts, box clutches, A-line dresses and even one-piece swimsuits. Already spotted on notable fashion figures like Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Wonderland Magazine fashion editor Julia Sarr-Jamois.

When Alexander Wang released the video for his Spring 2013 ad campaign featuring Bon Qui Qui, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Bon Qui Qui, a character formerly on “MADtv,” played by Anjelah Johnson, was in full “ghetto girl” mode working in Alexander Wang’s swank boutique and yelling at his elite customers including Alessandra Ambrosio, A$AP Rocky, Shannan Click, Simon Doonan and Natasha Lyonne. Similar to her role on “MADtv” where she worked at “King Burger,” Bon Qui Qui is popping gum, rocking a two-tone weave and mouthing off at clients and her employer in the Gavin McIness-directed video. Most think her satirical caricature is hilarious and even brilliant, but not everyone is laughing.

The Frisky writes:

Bon Qui Qui is a stereotype of a sassy, back-talking Latina woman. [...] I can’t help but feel uncomfortable watching this. Johnson’s caricature is the only representation of a woman of color in the video — she’s effectively the butt of the joke, and portrayed as an uncultured, unsophisticated, rude person. That seems pretty shitty to me. [...]

In a 2010 New York Times profile, [Johnson] said: “Deep down inside, I’m really a black girl stuck in a Mexican girl’s body.” She then went on to mock an audience member’s disapproval of the Bon Qui Qui character: “Once I was doing Bon Qui Qui in Miami, and this black girl was in the audience and she yelled out, ‘That’s not funny!’ which was really funny because she sounded exactly like the character I was playing.” So, yeah.

 

To be sure, Bon Qui Qui’s character is rooted in stereotypes but is it offensive? Many disagree and believe it’s just innocent humor. Others think it offends a class of people as opposed to race or ethnicity.

First Lady Michelle Obama sent the fashion industry into a frenzy during inauguration weekend when she wore Jason Wu to the ball and debuted a new hairstyle with bangs. It reignited an interest in Michelle Obama’s well-documented presence in the business of fashion. Her style of mixing high and low and accessorizing sheath dresses with belts and pearls is mimicked and praised all over the world. Items she wears, like the Tracy Reese dress at the Democratic National Convention, often sell out soon after her appearances. Given her singular style and influence, it’s only fitting that she grace the cover of the publication many consider to be the fashion bible, Vogue, for a second time (she first appeared in March of 2009).

It’s rumored that she was photographed for the cover of Vogue yesterday when the publication’s staff was spied moving cameras and suitcases into the White House. There has been speculation that world renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz shot Mrs. O for the March issue. This time, however, her husband President Barack Obama could be involved.

According to The Washingtonian, “the President’s public schedule is clear for the day, which could indicate he may be involved in the photography session.” It’s always great to see the First Lady acknowledged for her fantastic sense of style, especially by one of the top fashion magazines in the country.

There’s a new face on this season of “Project Runway,” that may be familiar to Clutch readers, designer Samantha Black.

The designer caught our eye a few years back because of her fearless, stylish, young and imaginative pieces. Under the brand Sammy B. Designs, Samantha Black churns out clothing, accessories and swimwear for “confident, fearless females who love to express themselves with their clothes,” she told Clutch. “I design for females who dibble and dabble in the different areas of clothing mixing and matching. The female who has a personal sense of style and uses my line to compliment her fly.”

Sammy’s line has grown immensely since our 2011 interview with features in Jones Magazine and fans like Keri Hilson and Dawn Richard.

Her latest achievement is a highly-coveted spot on “Project Runway,” the popular reality design competition on “Lifetime.” Samantha told the network she believes she can win the show ”because my aesthetic matched with my drive is something not many people possess.”

If her first design, a black dress with an embroidered neckline and flared skirt, is any indication, she is a shoo-in for the top spot.

Benetton enlisted a diverse array of subjects for their Spring 2013 ad campaign, including Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek and Brazilian transsexual model, Lea T. The dynamic group of models strike energetic poses for photographer Giulio Rusitchelli’s camera in Benetton’s colorful Spring wardrobe.

In a fun video interview, they each speak honestly and openly about their personal lives and what the word “color” means to them.  Besides revealing that, like many women, she chooses outfit colors based on her mood, Alex Wek drops this inspirational gem: “You have to be able to accept yourself bad and good because there is no perfect.” We couldn’t agree more.

Yesterday was full of memorable moments from President Obama taking his second oath of office at the inauguration to performances by Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce. One of the most awe-inspiring events for us was seeing President Obama and his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, dance as Jennifer Hudson serenaded them with a sultry version of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” The First Couple was the picture of grace, elegance and class, and their love for one another was evident.

The icing on the cake was Michelle Obama’s exquisite Jason Wu gown. Though we could come up with countless reasons why we thought it was the perfect choice for such an extraordinary occasion, here are five:

1. It flattered her body.

Michelle Obama has the art of dressing for your body down to a science. Her custom Jason Wu gown flattered her arms and toned upper body.

2. A woman in red makes a powerful statement.

Mrs. O chose red for the inaugural ball which conveys power, confidence, strength, passion and boldness, all elements of her public image that should be celebrated.

3. The gown’s style was timeless yet modern.

Few things are as timeless as a classic red gown but FLOTUS’ Jason Wu dress had modern, trend-concious flourishes like velvet detailing and a sassy keyhole in the neckline.

4. She chose Jason Wu.

Mrs. Obama could’ve worn a more established, conservative and older designer but instead, she chose Jason Wu, a young American artisan who is full of promise and talent. Fun fact: he also designed the dress she wore at the inaugural ball in 2009.

5. It was decidedly elegant.

Naysayers took to Twitter to chide the First Lady for wearing such a “simple” gown but I’d argue that it was elegant and classic. Not only is it true to the adage that “less is more,” but it shows that she doesn’t feel the need to impress, but rather wears what she loves.

It’s true what they say: women always be shopping. I can be home sick, in bed late at night, with 7,000 things to do, and I will still have one browser window open to eBay or ASOS. As such, I know a thing or two about shopping and how to do it. And so does the rest of The Frisky staff. That’s why we’ve culled together this list of 28 tips that will help you get the best stuff at the best prices — and not just cool stuff, but items you’ll actuallywear. So take a look at our tips, and share your own in the comments.

1. Try on everything that catches your eye–stuff looks SO different on your body than it does on the hanger, and we often get caught up in a really narrow definition of what looks good on us.

2. Don’t speed-shop, especially if you’re searching for something really specific. Give yourself enough time to browse, try stuff on, and not get all stressed out.

3. Don’t start body-hating when stuff doesn’t fit right. Every body is unique, and a mass-produced piece of fabric labeled with an arbitrary size doesn’t mean anything about your body. Repeat after me: the clothes are wrong for your body; your body is not wrong for the clothes.

4. If you randomly find a perfect special occasion dress, you should just buy it, even if you have no special occasions on your calendar. Because shopping for a great dress like a week before your friend’s wedding or your company party is not fun and it’s pretty rare that you’re gonna find something awesome on a short timeline.

5.  Take a trusted friend with you who tells you when something looks shitty on you.

6. That being said, shop alone sometimes. Shopping with friends is fun and can be helpful, but shopping alone means the only opinion that matters is yours.

7. When I’m not in the mood to brave harsh lighting and pushy salespeople, I’ll just buy a couple different sizes of things and try them on at home. It’s not the most efficient way to shop, but it gives me more time to think about stuff and evaluate it in my own mirror, and with other pieces I already own.

8. Consider what you have in your closet that you can wear with the item before you buy it. If it only goes with one or two other things, is it really worth getting?

9. Likewise, does it ONLY work during one or two seasons? The best items in our closets are the ones that we can wear in different ways depending on the season. For example, a dress that works bare-legged with wedges in spring/summer, or with a turtleneck underneath and boots in fall/winter.

10. If you find a dress with a fit you like, check the designer online, and see if the dress is made in other colorways or patterns. I just bought two dresses in different colors from Free People that I plan on wearing all summer long!

11. Before you buy, ask yourself: Do I like this item more than what I walked in the store wearing. If not, just put it down.

12. Consider: Am I buying this for the person I am now, or for some past version of myself? Is this my style now, or a past style I recognize and like, but don’t actually want to wear anymore?

13. Don’t pay attention to the number on the tag — pay attention to the way things fit. There’s very little consistency among brands with regards to sizing anyway.

14. Wear slip on shoes/flats, for easy access.

15. Go shopping on a good hair day and a day when you are NOT period-y and bloated, so you’re less likely to get sidetracked by the “ugh, I look awful” thing when you’re staring at yourself in a mirror.

16. Calculate the price/wear ratio — i.e. Jessica wears her $158 jeans from Anthropologie twice a week, so they’re totally worth it.

17. If you can afford it, purchase a whole outfit at once so you don’t end up with shirts or pants that don’t quite match anything else.

18. Carry hand sanitizer in your purse. Dressing rooms can be kinda gross.

19. If you really like a basic — for example, Gap T-shirts — buy two or three at once.

20. Oh! And if you purchase something cheaply made, like shoes from Payless, envision what they’d look like when they’re more beaten up.  That’s how they’re going to look very, very soon.

21. Also: don’t wear heavy foundation, so you don’t risk smearing makeup on stuff you try on.

22. Pick key pieces that you know you need and decide beforehand what kinds of items you’re looking for.

23. Don’t go shopping when you’re emotional and more prone to make impulse purchases.

24. Avoid the dressing room altogether if it’s one of those badly lit ones that makes you look like your entire body is dimpled (Lululemon’s dressing rooms are the biggest offenders).

25. Make sure you look in a three-way mirror if you can.

26. If a garment makes you want to do a little dance in the dressing room, buy it. If not, rethink it. (Except basics, which don’t necessarily need to be dance-worthy.)

27. If you’re buying online, make sure to check coupon sites like RetailMeNot, to see if there are any discount codes that might apply to your purchase.

28. Or, try a site like ShopItToMe, which will tell you when your preferred brands are holding sales.
