Sparkling ocean, long stretches of beach, and the warm sugar-like sand of Miami can affordably be the backdrop of your daily life, now that it’s possible for young renters to lease low-cost luxurious digs. Posh pads meant to be second homes for the affluent that were built during the time of the big real estate bust, are now being rented at low rates to young professionals while property owners wait for the market conditions to improve. And that could take years.

With the many bistros offering fine cuisine, the sexy nightlife known to many, and a population of young professionals growing , Miami could be more than just a hot spot for a fabulous getaway. It’s quickly becoming an attractive relocation choice.

With our kicks carrying that much weight, one could argue the kind of dough we ladies are known to throw down on our Diors is justified. Looking the part helps us get ahead, right? So it’s no surprise Glamour reports the average woman will buy 469 pairs of shoes in her lifetime, spending around $25, 000.

But with experts saying women are more likely to outlive their significant others, which makes them ultimately responsible for creating a financial future that spans as far as their nineties, our love for shoes could actually be crippling, (no pun intended) to our personal wealth.

Is it time to double check the shoe game?

Somebody had to come down hard on banks charging their customers extreme overdraft fees. And that’s just what the Obama administration has done. Thanks to new changes put into place, banks can no longer get over on someone trying to purchase an 89 cent pack of Doublemint without having the available funds. But banks are coming back hard to recoup their losses. Free checking, a product many of us have come to prefer over any fee-based account–no matter how great the services you get for that fee–will soon be no more.

While your financial institution is likely to notify you before any changes take place, expect your account to be charged a monthly fee, or a raise in the minimum balance required to maintain your account soon. You’ll want to also be on the lookout for any notices alerting you of changes that will take effect. Allowing room in your budget for new charges right away is a good idea. You don’t want to get caught up with these new fees overdrawing your account, no matter how affordable overdraft charges may now be.

I’ve often joked in the past when I was a student that if my rent, food and car note was sponsored, I’d promise to do something fly with my life. Well, SponsorMyDegree.com, a company that makes it possible for students and graduates to receive free money for college tuition and student loans (I don’t know about the rest) through micro-sponsorships is not a joke.

Membership with SponsorMyDegree.com is free, and anyone from family and friends to caring companies can sponsor as much as they want or as little as five dollars. Once you’ve accumulated at least twenty dollars in your account, SponsorMyDegree.com will pay the money to your tuition or student loan accounts directly. This method gives sponsors the assurance that their contributions will be used for educational purposes only. You don’t have to currently be enrolled in a college or university to become a member, but SponsorMyDegree.com will verify your enrollment status or graduation before monies can be paid toward your expenses.

Since everyone and their mommas, literally, are on Facebook, you can promote your Sponsor My Degree profile, and encourage people to sponsor you.

Check out SponsorMyDegree.com and learn more. And yeah, no sponsorship for rent and food. I double checked.

Now that summer is entirely here, you might find yourself slipping into vacation mode when there’s work to do. Taking a break from your job search; one that has been going on for more than a few months now may sound like a good idea. But the thing is, you can still put in work meeting up for cocktails on Friday, attending your family reunion and hitting up some of the cities hottest festivals at the same time.

Here are some tips for staying on top of your game while having fun too!

Business and Pleasure
You can’t expect to effectively accomplish a whole lot when you’re preoccupied with the great outdoors. So go ahead, get out and have some fun. Networking is about building relationships, and the best way to start building relationships is to mix and mingle with people. In this case, it’s okay to mix business with pleasure because this is partying with a purpose. So accept those invitations for cocktails, barbecues, weddings and other fun summer soirees. You never know who you’ll meet or who may lead you to your next job opportunity.

Succeeding While Others are Sleeping
Believe it or not, some people do hang-up their job search efforts for the summer. The good thing about this is that it decreases the competition, and increases your chances of getting hired. So keep it moving.

Do a Little Bit Everyday
The warm weather offers a lot of temptation, and when the sound of summer comes creeping through your window, it’s easy to get sidetracked from what’s most important. One way to keep yourself focused is to make a list of weekly or monthly goals, and assign yourself small, daily objectives to help you reach those goals. Following-up with one job, writing a cover letter for another or setting up a coffee date with an old colleague you ran into at a friend’s 4th of July cookout–who is now the hiring manager for a great company–are all things that can be done quickly and don’t have to take an entire day to do.

Be Patient
If things seem to be moving slower to you, be patient. If you haven’t heard anything from a contact you’re wanting to connect with, or the phone call for a position you hope you’re chosen to fill, wait a little longer before following up. This is vacation season, and decision makers want to soak up some sun too.

I almost live in every pair of my boyfriend jeans. I don’t have to worry about being matchy with my neutral platform pumps for those nights on the town (more money for cocktails!) and my peasant shirts are perfect for any day of the week. These staples will stretch and save you paper!

Jobs as we once knew them with affordable insurance, vacation pay, free or discounted gym memberships and all that fab are on the decline....

Jobs as we once knew them with affordable insurance, vacation pay, free or discounted gym memberships and all that fab are on the decline. The business model that’s on the up and up? Independent contractor. The government has estimated that currently 31 percent of U.S. workers already work as independent contractors, and experts predict in 10 years, that number could increase to 40 percent or more. That means those that will be holding traditional jobs with traditional benefits will be the minority.

You don’t have to tell me to do MY thing twice!

These predictions may raise fear and possibly even a little panic in many as they are forced into entrepreneurship. But, my question is what’s wrong with entrepreneurship? Bring on the bunny slippers! Hello life and work you love. You can set-up more dates with the sun or set-up shop right under her. No more dimly lit cubicles, silly office politics and giving your all to a company that can still lay you off at any time when cutbacks are necessary. And, it can and does happen to the true gems. There are known cases where companies have even fired good employees only to hire them back, offering only the money they will make. Nothing else. Nada.

Nice!

We can do better.

The age of self-reliance is now upon us, and clutchettes will, no doubt, rise to the occasion. But the move to entrepreneurship is never an easy one. These tips can help make the transition a smoother one.

Profitable passion
No matter what you heart, there’s a way to turn you passion into livable profits. Life is too short not to love what you do. So conserve some of that energy used for building someone else’s empire for building your own. If you’re currently employed, and no longer want to gamble with your work life, make moves now! Using your full-time job is often the way many fund the move to entrepreneurship.

Spread your social wings on and offline
Master social media tools so you can effectively get the word out about what you’re up to. This skill will serve you well when you’re actually in business for yourself. Stay up-to-date on the latest and most popular social media technology for branding purposes and gaining new business. Study the social media techniques of those who do it well, and participate in as many networking events as you can or form your own.

Don’t leave work without it!
Take advantage of on-the-job-training, computer courses and certificate programs that your employer offers for free. This knowledge, too, will serve you well when you’re ready to launch your own business. Continue to nurture relationships you’ve already built in the workplace, and keep forming new ones. These are the people who could be your future clients, and will be a catalyst in that word-of-mouth business for you.

Marketing Motivation
I hated sales jobs growing up. Held a brief position as a telemarketer selling credit cards in college (and now it makes perfect sense why I failed so miserably at it). But if your going the entrepreneurship route, marketing yourself and your services well is essential to your success. This skill takes practice, and it can be quite intimidating to put yourself out there. But you believe in your abilities and the service(s) you have to offer. Right? That’s your motivation!

It’s usually my heavier jeans and khakis. But even though these winter wardrobe staples (especially khakis) tend to be of a heavier material, I’ve decided to make them year-round by cuffing them at the bottom. It keeps me from having to say goodbye or buy a bunch of new looks. Plus, the idea of organic lazy summer looks costing me not a penny excites me!

Whew! On top of that, you’re dealing with the funny ways of men. No one said the journey of a sexy and drama-free life would be easy. So, in no way should you cut back on your therapy sessions- girl’s night out! Your girls are your support system, and no one knows better than them what you’re going through because they’re most likely on the same quest you are. Plus, we all know girl talk, drinks, good food, drinks and fun aids us in figuring out some of life’s biggest dilemmas. But, a recessionista has still got to watch her resources. So what do you do? Order the drinks of course, but make your main (and only) meal a choice from the list of appetizers on the menu. Appetizers are always cheaper than main courses, and have you noticed appetizers are looking more and more like full meals these days?
