It’s been a long time since a comedy show captured our attention. In Living Color did it. The Chappelle Show did it. But since it went off the air in 2006 a huge void has gone unfilled.

Enter comedian Deon Cole and his show, Deon Cole’s Black Box. Produced by Conan O’Brien, Deon Cole’s show mixes internet viral videos with Cole’s comedic reimagining to present something both timely and hilarious.

While riffing on Internet memes is nothing new, Cole says his show will not dabble in the stereotypical foolishness we see on the web.

He told Laughspin: “Nah, not gonna do that. Shout out to World Star Hip-Hop and my boy Q and everybody over there. Nah, the show is just my point of view, man. That’s all it is. You give me a topic, you give everybody else a topic, you’re gonna hear variations of different comedy styles. That’s all it is. This is just my version of what’s going on. I’m not gonna take away from nobody else’s version, but I’ve got something to say about it, too.”

So what sets Black Box apart from similar shows like Tosh 2.0? According to Cole, his point of view.

“Every great comic has a unique perspective about whatever it is. And that’s what I think I have in my stand-up. That’s the difference between all of this stuff. You gotta understand: all these shows and everything that goes on television is the same wheel. It’s just a different rim. That’s how you have to look at it. It’s a different rim on the same damn wheel. I’m not doing nothing different than what anybody else is doing but giving my opinion. That’s what makes me totally different from anybody else. That’s it. That’s the difference. That’s the key. My approach, my delivery, all of that is the key thing. You could watch Sports Center or you could watch Fox Sports. It’s the same thing. It’s just what your preference is. You got Leno, Conan, Letterman knocking at the same topics.”

Check out a few clips of Deon Cole’s Black Box. The show airs Mondays at 10pm EST. Will you be tuning in?

Of course there are plenty of mommy blogs out there but Mater Mea takes up the notch on online compositions about motherhood.

The site describes itself as “a celebration of the multifaceted lives of mothers of color, born from a simple idea: that mothers come from all different walks of life. In collaboration with these inspirational women, mater mea uses images and text to illustrate how they juggle womanhood, motherhood and their careers — and how all three worlds have influenced their unique sense of style.”

The site features authentic stories from across New York City — everywhere from Westchester County, Brooklyn, Harlem to the Bronx — in the most beautiful states of motherhood: at home with their children.

Mater Mea is stylized very much like a literary magazine, adding an intimate and effortless sense of cool to a pot of bubbling stories told by voices that often go untold.

Two sistahs are burning up the streets of New York City with their style and talent. Charly and Marguex are the starlets of their own musical duo. They have been seen playing classical violin in subway stations and on the streets of New York and have performed at a variety of small bars and clubs.

Based in Brooklyn, Charly and Margaux met two years ago and do some spunky renditions of modern hip-hop and R&B — including a fun remix of Kendrick Lamar’s “The Recipe”.

Did we mention that they rock some fabulous afros while being musical beasts? Check for them at their upcoming performance on December 19th at 168 Delancy if you’re in New York.

The first and only time I saw Solange Knowles perform live was back in 2008 when she and Chrisette Michelle opened for Raheem DeVaughn’s Art of Love tour. Back then Solange was in the middle of her ‘60s soul vibe and was preforming songs from her second album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams.

When she began her set, the crowd gave her a hard time. They heckled her about her look, which matched the album’s tone and was reminiscent of her older sister’s Dreamgirls’ garb. But by the end of her performance Solo had them eating out of the palm of her hand. Her voice was strong, her moves confident, and it was clear that she was more than just Beyonce’s little sister.

In the years since that night, Solange has established herself as a style maven, a quirky, outspoken woman who is as passionate about fashion as she is about music. And she’s in-demand.

While Solange has graced the pages of nearly every magazine from Elle to In Style showcasing her signature off-beat style, one thing has been missing: the music.

Now she’s back with a new EP, True, a new sound, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s finally Solange’s time to shine.

So far the reviews of True have been good. Nearly 500 eager customers have given her EP kudos. Pitchfork said Solo had finally come into “her own time and on her own terms,” and celeb blog Crushable even wondered if Solange was the better Knowles sister.

With sold out shows in New York and London under her belt, to say that Solange is finally earning her just due would be an understatement. But will all of the buzz and her hipster status finally equal musical success?

We hope so.

Have you heard Solange’s EP, True? What do you think?

When I’m not writing, I spend a fair amount of time link surfing—basically, clicking on links to interesting things that come across my Facebook and Twitter feeds. While most of what’s shared is either news or lackluster blogs, sometime I come across a site that’s really, really great.

While I’ve shared my affection I Am the NuBlack, Street Etiquette, and of course, my favorite male bloggers, there are so many others that I adore.

So because it’s Friday and you may be looking to fill those last few hours at work while you countdown to the weekend, here are a few more blogs to keep on your radar.

Fly

Everything about this site is so pretty: the design, the content, and the beautiful images that are shared. When I need a shot of creative inspiration or I just want to get some new ideas for my wardrobe (or home), I visit Andrea Pippins’ stylish blog.

This Is Your Conscience

You may not like his delivery, but Anthony Blades gives readers the straight dope on dating, relationships, life, and everything we think about but are too P.C. to say. While he says he isn’t out to offend anyone, you should read Blades’ site with an open mind. He may shock you, but he’s definitely being real.

Jack and Jill Politics

Who said black folks aren’t politically active? Cheryl Contee and Baratunde Thurston rejected this notion and break down exactly how politics affect our lives on Jack and Jill Politics. If you want to discuss everything from the current presidential race to every idiotic thing a politician has ever said or did, Jack and Jill Politics is your place.

That’s the list for now. What blogs do you read regularly?

The sisters, both pre-med majors, have some pretty ambitious goals. Wanting to simultaneously pursue a medical degree and a PhD in biomedical research, the pair applied to one of the most selective medical schools in the country hoping to get one of the few spots for the eight-year program. Had just one of the ladies gotten into the University of Massachusetts it would have been an amazing feat, but both ladies beat the odds and won a spot in the prestigious program.

“I was ecstatic,” Ashley told a local news station. “My sister and I were jumping up and down and we fell over and ended up tripping each other because we were so happy. We didn’t think it would happen and it did.”

Ashley and Asia will head to the university on a full scholarship and hope to put their knowledge to use to open a hospital for low-income residents. And considering the fact that they’ve already beaten some steep odds, I have no doubt they’ll reach their goals.

Jamaica is having a pretty good year. The island nation inaugurated Portia Simpson-Miller, its first female Prime Minister (again), celebrated its 50th year of independence, and once again dominated the premier track and field events at the Olympic games.

While the entire world seemed to celebrate Jamaica’s sporting accomplishments, the renewed spotlight on the island made me think of some of my favorite musicians. Everyone in the world knows Bob Marley, but there’s more to Jamrock than just his music.

Artists like Freddy McGreggor, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Sizzla, Jah Cure, and so many others have made Jamaica ground zero for iconic music, but what about the ladies?

As I scrolled through my mental playlist of female reggae artists I love, three stood out above the rest.

Sister Nancy

Even dancehall and reggae novices know Sister Nancy’s signature tracks. Her iconic “Bam Bam” has been burning up dance floors for decades, and have even found a home in hip-hop. Lauryn Hill sampled “Bam Bam” for her break-away anthem, “Lost Ones,” and Alicia Keys borrowed the signature track for the “No One” remix. Sister Nancy is known as the first female dancehall DJ and its most important female voice for over two decades, and her music continues to inspire others to move.

Tanya Stephens

Tanya Stephens burst on the scene in the ‘90s with her signature empowering style. In a male-dominated world that often relegates women to sexual objects, Stephens has been one of the women who has always asserted her power and pushed back against the blatant sexism and misogyny. Over the years Stephens’ music has gotten increasingly political, and she’s even tackled issues such as Jamaica’s rampant homophobia. Stephens proves that music can be both socially responsible and popular. Salute!

Patra

I distinctly remember being 11 or 12 and watching Patra gyrate in her cut-off shorts and combat boots. Back then I was amazed at her in-your-face style and blatant sexuality, but I couldn’t stop watching. Her songs, “Romantic Call,” “Queen of the Pack,” and “Worker Man” found their way onto my homemade mixtapes, and I begged my mom to let me braid my hair in her signature style (no dice). Like her counterpart, Lady Saw, Patra was a Dacehall Queen, able to boast and brag along side any of her male counterparts, and while she sang mostly of sex, her power could not be denied.

Who are some of your favorite female reggae/dancehall artists?

Helen Kinuthia will attempt to do something few have done before: climb Mount Everest. The Kenyan climber recently beat out 150 other competitors to earn a spot scaling Everest for a charity climbing expedition in 2014. Kinuthia won her spot by climbing Mt. Kenya, Africa’s second-tallest mountain.

Jezebel gives more details on Kinuthia’s historic attempt:

…if Helen Kinuthia successfully surmounts the mountain in 2014 as part of Expedition Everest, she would become the very first Kenyan ever to climb to the very top of the world.

According to press materials, Expedition Everest is a New York-based initiative aimed at raising $500,000 for the Flying Kites Leadership Academy in Njambini, Kenya, an organization seeking “to raise the standards of care available to the world’s poorest children” through education and advocacy.

Kinuthia is excited at the thought of making history. If she reaches Everest’s summit, she’ll not only be the first black African woman to do so, but she’ll also be the first Kenyan as well.

I am honored, excited, and driven to represent my country atop Everest, especially for a campaign as important and meaningful as Expedition Everest. It is a true privilege to have the chance to climb for Kenya, and the opportunity to be the first black African woman on the summit.

We wish her luck!

Ava DuVernay is a woman after our own heart. After the California native saw that black independent films were having a tough time getting distributed she decided to do something about it.

DuVernay founded AFFRM, the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement, which has helped indie gems like Restless City, KINYARWANDA, and DuVernay’s award-winning film, Middle of Nowhere make it to the big screen.

Back in February, I spoke with DuVernay about why she chose to produce and distribute her films independently verses trying to gain a big Hollywood deal, and her answer was simple: that’s not my goal.

“My goal is not to go dealing with studios from a place of begging and hoping they can help me put my stuff out,” she explained. “We’re going to put it out and if somebody wants to come along and be in the party, then that’s great, but we have a bit of a different posture with the films that we do.”

Different indeed. DuVernay’s films are intensely written and acted, and adeptly shot. She tackles stories that rarely end up on the big screen. Case in point? Her latest film due out this fall, Middle of Nowhere, which follows a woman who has to decide if she will support her incarcerated husband through his prison sentence or move on with her life. The film earned DuVernay a place in history, making her the first black woman to win Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival, and cemented her power-player status.

While Hollywood and other mainstream outlets continue to overlook filmmakers of color, DuVernay has decided to navigate the business on her own terms. And from the looks of things it seems to be working out just fine.

Watch the trailer for DuVernay’s upcoming film, ‘Middle of Nowhere’

Comprised of Shoniwa and guitarist Dan Smith, the Noisettes first burst on the scene back in 2005, playing clubs and bars, and garnering praise in the press. Back then Entertainment Weekly lavished the band with positive reviews, describing their sound as “high-drama, heavily syncopated swagger-and-sway rock.”

Although they’ve toured extensively, it’s been three years since the Noisettes released a studio album. But they’re back and gearing up to release their latest effort, Contact.

Check out the irresistible first single, “Winner,” off of their forthcoming album and let us know what you think!

Amid the reality shows, celebs behaving badly, and the negative news stories, we rarely hear about the positive things black folks are doing each and every day. Thankfully, we aren’t buying into the hype, and some, like CLUTCH, love shining a light on the members of our community who are excelling in their fields.

This year, The Network Journal rolled out its annual list of 40 brilliant black innovators in business, politics, and academia. This year’s list includes honorees from companies like L’Oréal (Aida Moudachirou- Rebois), Bloomingdale’s (Nicole Cokley), General Motors (Brooke Ellis), NBC Universal (Sharita Brantley), and the 135th Street Agency (Shante Bacon), as well as those from academia and the non-profit sector, like Dr. Janna Andrews, assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology at the SUNY Stony Brook Winthrop University Hospital.

The 2012 class of ‘40 Under 40’ awardees were celebrated at the The Network Journal’s 15th Annual ‘40 Under 40’ Awards Dinner at the Crowne Plaza in Times Square Wednesday evening in New York City. Talk about black excellence!

With so many negatives images of black men and women circling in the media, events such as this are not only valuable, but necessary. We can’t rely on others to share stories of our brilliance; it’s become clear we have to do it ourselves.

To see the entire list of honorees, visit The Network Journal website

As we all know, black folks listen to more than the just latest rap tune or R&B song playing on the radio. From jazz and electronica, to garage and punk, our musical tastes are as varied and diverse as we are.

Unfortunately, record labels don’t seem to know it. Or respect that, like everyone else, we like to genre surf with the best of them. So, we do what we’ve always done when we aren’t allowed mainstream access: We make our own way. One artist attempting to forge her own path is the Afro-punk musician, (i am) isis.

Brooklyn’s own (i am) isis is a self-proclaimed “spoken soul rocker” who mixes poetry with hard-edged melodies. (i am) isis was recently nominated for the National Poetry Awards “Spoken Word Single of the Year,” and her debut video, Drive Me, was chosen as “Artist of the Month” on Soul Train/Comcast-on-Demand.

These days, the indie upstart is hoping to win a spot on at this year’s Afro-Punk 2012 music festival and perform alongside Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, and Gym Class Heroes. But she needs your support.

Leela James can sing. Matter of fact, she can saaaaaang. At just 29 years old, the Los Angeles native’s music has been described as a throwback to a bygone era of old school soul. Amid a sea of auto-tuned, polished, mixed down singers, James’ voice is raw, real, and demands your attention.

Although she’s worked with everyone from Kanye West to BB King, James’ latest album pays homage to her favorite artist, Etta James.

This summer, Leela will release In The Spirit of Etta James, her offering to the late blues icon known for giving her all to the music. Leela’s music is in the tradition of Etta James and she was even compared to the legendary singer as a child.

Speaking about her idol, Leela explained what drew her into to James’ music, “I think Etta James sang from real pain, which truly made the blues and soul of her music special. Very few artists are able to convey that sincere pain in their music.”

Full of emotion, strength and undeniable soul, Leela James’ voice and her lyrics remind us that real singers are still here and soul music is alive and kicking.

See, this is why I love Facebook.

Last night a friend posted this cute little link to her timeline and I thought it was so amazingly dope I wanted to share it.

One night, London based photographer Obi Nwokedi was bored and looking for a little inspiration. After seeing a French photographer’s Barbie and Ken wedding shoot, Nwokedi set out to recreate it, only this time, he reimaged the spread as a traditional Nigerian wedding. What he created was a series of whimsical images that felt less like staged dolls and more like an actual wedding full of fun, love, and a whole lot of partying.

Check out some of my favorite images from Nwokedi’s spread:

Over the weekend, I watched Melissa Harris-Perry’s MSNBC show and learned of the amazing group, Black Girls Code, a California-based non-profit aiming to inspire black girls to pursue technology.

Founded by tech enthusiast Kimberly Bryant, Black Girls Code’s mission is simple, yet necessary: “To increase the number of women of color in digital careers by empowering girls of color” to pursue STEM careers.

After pursuing her studies in Electrical Engineering and seeing a lack of African-American women in her classes and in the workplace, Bryant says she founded Black Girls Code to encourage young girls to consider these fields.

She explains:

…as I pursued my studies, feeling culturally isolated: few of my classmates looked like me. While we shared similar aspirations and many good times, there’s much to be said for making any challenging journey with people of the same cultural background.

Much has changed since my college days, but there’s still a dearth of African-American women in science, technology, engineering and math professions, an absence that cannot be explained by, say, a lack of interest in these fields. Lack of access and lack of exposure to STEM topics are the likelier culprits.

Black Girls Code is based in Oakland, but this summer the organization is offering coding workshops and tech classes for young girls across the country in Atlanta, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York.

Learn more about Black Girls Code and their summer workshops on their website.

Thankfully, our girl Demetria Lucas hipped me to AKA and because we’re always on a mission to share the latest, hottest, most creative things coming out of the Motherland (and the diaspora as a whole), I wanted to pass his music along to you.

So who is AKA? He’s an award winning emcee from South Africa whose latest album, Alter Ego, spent weeks atop the charts. He’s rocked crowds with Rick Ross, been featured on MTV Base’s show Brand New Artist, and has been called South Africa’s Drake, rocking sold out shows and spreading his brand of hip hop across the country.

But like many artists, AKA hopes to make a dint in the ever-competitive American market and flex his mic skills along side of music’s hottest acts. But judging from his music—full of energy and clever rhymes—and his growing social media presence, making a splash in the States is bound to happen.

Check out a few of his hits and let us know if you’re feeling it:

While accompanying her hubby on his Watch the Throne tour, Bey was not to be missed in her sexy getup which costs a few month’s worth of rent for most of us. We’re talking DSquared2′s Red Smoking Blazer ($868), Super Skinny Leather Leggings by J Brand ($895), Alexander McQueen’s De-Manta Tiger Print Clutch ($525 ), and a banging pair of Tom Ford Black Leather Wedges with a hold chain around the ankle ($1,290)—not to mention those shades which we wouldn’t mind getting our hands on once we figure out who they’re by.

Bey’s done a tuxedo jacket before, a flashier one to be exact, during the MTV Music Awards last year when she announced that she was pregnant, and in the corresponding Love on Top video she also pulled out similar jackets and full-on pant suits, but none have been as fire as this one right here. The red color is the perfect amount of pop to go with the black, white, and gold palette of the rest of her look. We think she might be channeling some of that MJ energy that has people saying she’s the second coming of the King of Pop. She definitely looks the part.

What do you think about Bey’s look?

We actually don’t care whether it’s real or not it just needs to be black, shiny, and hot. Black leather used to only be reserved for jackets in the fall and winter boots but there’s no reason not to get your leather on in the spring and summer too with the lightweight options designers have come up with.
Forty-nine years ago today the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the precursor to the African Union, was founded in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Back then the OAU included 32 countries and continued to expand as countries gained independence until South Africa finally joined in 1994.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon explained the importance of Africa Day:

“Each year, Africa Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of the peoples and governments of Africa.”

Africa Day is a yearly celebration highlighting the achievements, culture, advancements, and histories of Africa’s countries. Celebrations are held across the continent, the UK, U.S., and the Caribbean. Some events include concerts, business forums, cultural exchanges, and lectures.

Despite what is often broadcast in Western media, Africa is a diverse continent with histories and cultures that stretch back to the beginning of the Earth. While many choose to focus on Africa’s challenges, Africa Day reminds us to celebrate its rich past and promising future.

In honor of Africa Day, check out one of my favorite Nigerian artists, Fela Kuti.

The Ole Miss website explains:

“On average, about 50 African-American students receive Ph.D.s in chemistry nationwide each year, so UM produced 6 percent of the national total,” said Maurice Eftink, associate provost and professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

The history-making candidates who received their degrees Friday were Kari Copeland of Coldwater, Margo Montgomery of New Orleans and Jeffrey Veals of Gloster. And a fourth African-American student, Shanna Stoddard of Louisville, Ky., is on track to earn her doctorate in chemistry in December.

“This is a significant achievement for these three graduates and their families, and it is also significant for the university,” Chancellor Dan Jones said. “UM 2020, our new strategic plan, calls on us as the flagship university of our state to lead our state and region in preparing professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, especially from underrepresented groups.”

It is the second time in recent years that UM has set a benchmark in STEM fields. The university produced four African-American Ph.D.s in mathematics in 2006.

“That was an even more outstanding achievement given that there are only 15-to-30 African-American Ph.D.s in math granted each year. But the current achievement is still pretty noteworthy,” Eftink said.

With our economy becoming increasingly dominated by jobs that require STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degrees, encouraging more African-American students to pursue these fields will give them the tools necessary to compete in a global economy.

Ivorian painter Augistin Kassi’s latest exhibition pays homage to his country’s rubenesque women. Although curvaceous women are often celebrated in art, Kassi said he wanted to highlight “big” women to remind them of their beauty.

“I wanted to fight the corner for so-called ‘big’ women who in their day were disliked and even imprisoned by the attitude that they weren’t beautiful,” Kassi told the BBC.

Kassi’s colorful style and expressive imagery was inspired by a trip he’d taken from Abidjan to Bingerville. While he rode in the “gbaka” (a mini-bus), a larger woman got on the bus and the driver attempted to charge her for two seats. An argument broke out and Kassi was inspired to work on his collection.

The exhibition has been well received in Abidjan, especially by some women who—for the first time—see themselves represented in art.

“They’re pretty and it represents real African women,” Awa Toure, an exhibit visitor told the BBC, “because in Africa when you have one or two children you take on a new form and that’s what the painter shows us in his work.”

Check out more images from Augistin Kassi’s collection on the BBC website.

Gone is the real passion, the depth, the individuality, creativity…the artistry. But every once in awhile someone steps on the scene and takes you by surprise. Like a diamond in the rough, they engulf you in their sound and return to music what was once lost. That someone is Emeli Sandé.

The British songstress may only be 24-years-old, but she belts out tunes with a classic soul styling reminiscent of Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Lauryn Hill. Her big break came when she was a teenager, but it wasn’t until 2010, after completing nearly four years of medical school, that Emeli decided to pursue her passion full time and she hasn’t looked back since. Simon Cowell called her “his favourite songwriter at the minute” after hearing the hits Emeli has penned for a number of artists, including Cher Lloyd, Susan Boyle, Preeya Kalidas, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, and Tinie Tempah. Her debut album Our Version of Events, showcases her towering talent especially on tracks like the strings-drenched “Daddy” and the hypnotic “Heaven.” In fact, the entire album has a retro-futurist feel, rife with raw emotion and loads of soul.

Outside of her musical talents Emeli Sandé has become something of a rising fashion icon. Her eclectic style is one all her own and the singer lives to be just as unique with her fashion as she is with her music. Emeli’s style is so eye-catching that even the legendary Madonna has taken a moment to stan over her hair and the Scottish Fashion Awards have nominated Emeli for their ‘Fashion Icon Award’ this year.

Beauty, brains, fashion sense and a voice like silk are just a few of the reasons why we love Emeli Sandé and after a few listens…you’ll love her too!

Back in October of 2008, Gabrielle Smith set a goal for herself: blog about the contributions of black folks in the diaspora for UK’s Black History Month. When the month was up, she decided to keep going and unearthing more treasures across the diaspora for her readers to enjoy.

She explains her reasons for curating The NuBlack:

My aim is to try and post things that are not necessarily ‘out there’, that are original, creative and that will hopefully inspire those after me (and hopefully those before me if they come across the site).

The name thenublack comes from the idea that my generation and those born to parents of the African diaspora have had a path paved for them by their ascendants.

Since stumbling on her site back in 2010 (and meeting Gabrielle last December), I’ve been a big fan. Smith, a London-based stop motions graphic designer, highlights art, music, culture, literature, and fashion from Millennial black folks around the globe.

I Am the NuBlack is not only dope, but it’s necessary. In a world that increasingly aims to marginalize our contributions to the world and as the media continues to ignore us, sites like Smith’s I Am the NuBlack offer a welcomed rebuttal against the constant barrage of negativity and tired stereotypes.

Have you visited I Am the NuBlack? What are your favorite sites for art and culture of black folks in the diaspora?

If you listened to the media, you’d think all black women were lazy, comfortable being overweight, and more concerned about their hair than their BMI. But we know better.

Like many Americans, some black women are indeed struggling with their weight, but despite the idea that we are allergic to physical activities, black women DO work out. Countless examples like Black Girls Run, GirlTrek, and A Black Girl’s Guide to Weight Loss show that black women—like all women—are concerned about our health. And while we may not be perfect (who is?) we are not sitting idly by while our health declines.

Enter, Black Women DO Work Out, a Facebook group with over 200,000 subscribers that champion health and fitness for black women. Although they are at various stages of their journeys, the women (and some men) who contribute to the group prove that black women are not only concerned about their health, but they are taking steps to improve it.

Black Women DO Work Out is a grassroots movement created by Crystal Adell to push back against the media’s attack on black women. Instead of shaming women because they may be overweight, Adell’s mission is to inundate them with “praise and encouragement in the way of nurturing sisterhood” which “will ultimately help keep others motivated in their own objectives.”

Brimming with countless examples of amazing weight loss stories, women taking the first steps to living a healthier life, and an overwhelming outpouring of support, Black Women DO Work Out is a welcomed reprieve for sistas looking to make healthy life choices.

From stats telling us we’re fat (despite most Americans being fat) and we’ll never get married, to the startling numbers of black women being infected with damn near every disease under the sun at higher rates than our white counterparts, black women get dissed in the media daily.

But thankfully we have created our own spaces that allow us to push back against the media’s constant attacks and continue to offer our perspectives on the world and ourselves.

Recently, the Harlow Project debuted a new video series called In(her)view that gives black women a chance to tell our own stories. In the eight-part series five black women will answer a single question and provide their take on the world.

In the first episode, the women answer the question “Why you love being a black woman,” and their words serve as a reminder to all of us to appreciate who we are.

Check it out and learn more about In(her)View on the Harlow Project website.

THEESatisfaction is a Seattle-based r&b duo whose music makes us think of Philly soul, Eykah Badu, Ursula Rucker, and the unidentifiable music a DJ would play at a very hip and very black Sunday brunch. The group, which consists of Stasia Irons and Catherine Harris-White, released its first official album awE naturalE in March and the song “QueenS,” is a standout track that suggests exactly what vibe you should be on to enjoy the music (and it’s a, regular person, very welcome sentiment that we haven’t heard in a long time): ”Leave your face at the door / turn off your swag / check your bag.” Turn off my swag? Yes, please.

The video for “QueenS” is a super-chill triumph in aesthetics and perfectly captures the beauty of black women while laying down a party vibe that’s not only easy to get into but seems to require that you not try too hard to do so. It was directed by cultural critic and hip-hop journalist dream hampton, and if you’re familiar with her written work you will definitely see her influence all over the screen. Check it out!
I felt like I was exposing myself, in a weird way. I’d hear my parents coming upstairs and I’d feel like I’d done something bad,” 22-year-old upstart soul singer Lianne La Havas tells the Evening Standard.

Since bursting on the scene, the London native has been described as “a soulful Beyonce,” but her haunting voice and adept songwriting put her in a category of her own.

La Havas, the product of a German father and Jamaican mother, was recently nominated for BBC’s sound of 2012 poll and has been dazzling audiences across the UK since dropping her first EP Lost & Found last October. La Havas seamlessly blends folk and soul, using her lithe voice to confidently move between genres, singing of love, longing, and life in ways that touch the deepest parts of our soul.

La Havas credits her father’s influence on her music, and lists Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, and India Arie as idols. But it’s one man—Prince—who La Havas adores. And it seems the feeling is mutual.

After hearing her music, Prince called La Havas and the two have already met in his hometown of Minneapolis. With a possible collaboration with The Artist in the works, it looks like Lianne La Havas will be around for a while sharing her gift with the world.

Check out some of my favorite Lianne La Havas songs. Have you gotten into her music?

If we listened to the media, we’d think Africa consisted of nothing but poverty, war, famine, desolate deserts, coups, and inhumane conditions. Luckily, we know better. And with the rise of the Internet, we are privy to people across the African diaspora telling diverse stories of the Motherland.

The blog, Africa Is A Country, is one of those outlets. The multimedia blog prides itself on telling another story of the continent. One that doesn’t include the overexposed images we see in the mainstream media.

Did you know Africa has a transgendered music star, or did you think the entire continent was mired in homophobia?

Or about the hilarious web series, ‘the African Experience in America‘?

If not, you need to start reading their blog.

Africa Is A Country shines a light on the artists, filmmakers, musicians, athletes, academics, and writers from across the Diaspora in such a way that gets you hooked. Much like my other favorite, AfriPop, Africa Is A Country tells a story that is not only fresh and new, but necessary.

Check out Africa Is A Country and show them some love.

Over the past few years, the mainstream media seemed to focus its attention on the plight of black women. If you listened to the Washington Post, for instance, you’d think we were all fat and happy, hopelessly single, dying of every disease in the book, and should break our necks to snag a white man because, after all, they are the answer.

Thankfully, many of us know not to buy into the hype. And while black women are indeed facing a host of challenges, instead of throwing ourselves a pity party, many of us are springing into action to help our sisters out.

Inspired by Harriet Tubman’s model of change, Vanessa Garrison and Tanya Morgan Dixon of GirlTrek is filling a need. Because all Americans are increasingly becoming overweight and living unhealthy lives, GirlTrek’s mission is to model healthy living for women and girls.

The website explains:

GirlTrek seeks to become a powerful, grassroots network of active women who model healthy living by changing their habits and family traditions. Together, we will advocate for healthier African American communities and inform health policy conversations at local and national levels. GirlTrek puts the put the “move” back in movement.

Through a three-pronged approach of walking, service, and discovery, GirlTrek aims to promote healthy living, sisterhood, and giving back to our communities.

Now that’s a movement I can get behind!

Learn more about GirlTrek on their website and find out how you can become involved.

In an interview with Okayplayer, Rodgers explains that the project was inspired by Black History month and aims to “shift the paradigm of the ‘great person’ conception of history [by acknowledging] the everyday person for their contribution to our collective legacy.” The collection includes some well-known people but mostly unknowns, and all of the photography is amateur — hence the term “vernacular.” The results, scanned from photos spanning decades of family and friends, are intriguing and their numbers growing. Pictures of folks’ parents and grandparents taken with strained color film juxstaposed with ripped and grainy black & whites whose stories are hard to even imagine…it’s quite priceless work.

Check out a few images from The Black Vernacular and follow the link if you’re interested in seeing more or submitting photos of your own.

Robert Glasper Experiment’s upcoming album Black Radio is exactly that — a jazzy, bluesy, hip-hop and r&b influenced collection of music that’s as much familiar as it is refreshing. It’s that kind of music that’s nice to wake up to, clean the house to, play while you’re putting effort into a home-cooked meal, or set the mood with soothing sounds.

For those who aren’t familiar, Robert Glasper Experiment is more of a band than a group: Robert Glasper is on the keys, Casey Benjamin on the sax and vocoder, Derrick Hodge on the bass, and Chris Dave on drums. This is real instrumentation made even better by a line-up of featured vocalists and emcees that reads like a who’s who in black music.

Erykah Badu sings the jazz standard “Afro Blue,” Stokely Williams from Mint Condition croons “Why Do We Try,” and Yaslin Bey (oh you know, Mos Def) raps the title track “Black Radio.” Lupe Fiasco, Bilal, Ledisi, Lahlah Hathaway, and a host of others also contribute, and the album ends with a cover version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It’s nothing short of awesome.

Check out the first single, “Ah Yeah,” featuring Musiq Soulchild and Chrisette Michelle, and listen to the whole album over at NPR.

I’ve been in love with the blog Street Etiquette for a while now.

The site, which showcases the diversity of black male style, is not only chock full of eye-candy, but also pushes the boundaries of what most consider an “acceptable” expression of black masculinity.

Recently, Street Etiquette released the editorial, “Crowned,” which takes a look at black men and their hair.

Unlike black women, whose hair has been debated and discussed at length, this editorial shines a light on the brothas, who–apparently–have their own questions, hang-ups, and issues with their hair.

We don’t mind facing the throes of winter as long as we’re armed with a fly top layer! Enter Mackage, a designer outwear collection that’s full of sharp designs that will take you effortlessly through the chilly seasons to come.

For Fall ’08 Mackage focuses on structured, but feminine fitted silhouettes infused with details inspired by looks from the Russian military. Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan, the duo behind the marvelous line, give traditional winter garb an urbane vixen makeover with cinched waist jackets accented wide leather belts, bell sleeves, and fiercely high collars. Even puffy jackets get sexy with bell sleeves and raccoon trim! Who knew that winter could be oh so glamorous? Whether you go for Mackage’s shearling, buttery leathers, or wool chevron print coats-you definitely won’t have to go short on style to stay warm this winter.

Mackage is available for purchase at Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel, Bloomingdales, and Neiman Marcus. For more information on Mackage please visit www.mackage.com.

Soha, a French vocalist of Algerian descent incorporates Reggae, Latin, Algerian, and Jazz – she truly is a girl of her time, knowing no boundaries other than the limit of her imagination. The result is a fantastic album that feels so much more than just the sum of these parts. There is no sense of trying items from a shopping list on for size – instead she has incorporated these influences into her soul and her music is a natural expression of this. Like all gifted musicians, Soha has assimilated a diverse range of influences but comes out the other side sounding wholly original.

What do Beyonce, Victoria Beckham and Rihanna have in common? They (and many others) have all been spotted wearing designs by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga. But what makes this designer + celeb = press equation unique is that the stars come to Balenciaga as opposed to the other way around. “I consider the celebrities to be very important, of course,” Nicolas told WWD in a past interview. “But I would say it’s not at any price. What’s happening with Balenciaga is usually they come to us. They come to the brand because they like the clothes. They go to the store, they see the press and they call us. We don’t have someone looking after the celebrities and trying to get them dressed.” Well, we can certainly understand why industry insiders and starlets alike are drawn to Ghesquiere’s collections. He has an uncanny ability to take strong, almost whimsical shapes that in less capable hands would make women look silly and spin them into fashion gold.

From wildly imaginative accessories (Exhibit A: those crazy shoes pictured here on Beyonce!) to sleek and modern dresses, Nicolas’s innovation and no compromise approach to design has breathed new life into the iconic brand. His work embraces a new era of design while personifying a quote made by the man himself, Cristobal Balenciaga which sums up the spirit of the house.

“A courtier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for color, a musician for harmony and a philosopher of temperance.”

For fall, the Balenciaga collection took us on a fantastic joy ride that played on futuristic ideals featuring ultra shiny structured fabrics, a mix of sharp and soft lines, and body conscious silhouettes.

When Jeanne Lanvin started her fashion empire in 1889 at the young age of 22, she undoubtedly created the business model that any fashion conglomerate worth its salt would aspire to today. She outfitted men, women and children in everything from furs to hats to wedding gowns and sportswear, went on to create fragrances for both sexes and open stores in Paris all with measureable degrees of success. But, even after Lanvin gained Couture House status in 1909, amongst the intricate embroidery and bead work of her more grandiose designs she did what most high fashion houses to this day neglect to do; she never forgot to incorporate clothing that women could actually live in and feel good while wearing it.

It’s the same spirit with which Israeli designer Albar Elbaz, who became design director in 2001 after honing his skills at Geoffrey Beene and YSL, designs with some 119 years later. Lanvin’s name is synonymous with “wearable, simple and feminine clothing” that has real women clamoring at retail and fashion editors cooing over the beautiful drape of his creations as a jeweler would examining a flawless diamond for the four C’s. He received a standing ovation for his Spring/Summer ’08 line that highlighted the wonders of the female form in a thrilling color palette and billowy silhouettes. This fall Lanvin makes black look interesting (no easy feat after seasons of eye popping color as the runway norm) and has us dreaming of shiny little baubles, intricate pleats, fierce fur and leather.

Mr. Elbaz’s talent goes far beyond the technicalities of design, as his humble spirit and true love for his customer always shines through his work. He told Bazaar “I am not coming from a rich family,I was not in boarding school in Switzerland, and my mother did not wear Balenciaga when she was young. I am coming from the edge of the edge of the middle, so I understand what it is. I remember my time there as well. And I think it’s made me what I am today.” He goes on “My job is to make women beautiful.” This may account for why women actually seem more like they’re floating than walking when they wear Lanvin and why icons like Kate Moss can always count on wearing the label in order to make a fashionable impression.

Despite her many commercial successes, Stella somehow manages to keep us fashion fanatics mesmerized each and every collection. Much more than the daughter of former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, this natural born designer expressed her aptitude in design well before her teenage years. And today with over twenty years in the industry, the seasoned designer has proven herself a fashion powerhouse. From Christian LaCroix couture to Adidas sportswear, Stella’s range has something to offer every woman.

With a bang Stella introduced the Stella McCartney brand with a major fashion show in 1995. Since developing her own, Stella has secured successful design ventures with Chloe, Gucci, LeSportsac, Target, H&M and Adidas. Although in her early years skeptics have questioned her ability, Stella’s edge and energy have ignited numerous youthful and invigorating collections. Able to create freely with her own collection, the Stella McCartney Collection has been consistently inspiring. No matter what the color palette, a Stella McCartney Collection is like watching cloth transform into wearable high definition living art. Since her early rocker chic days of immortalizing the skinny jean to her more recently sophisticated collections, Stella designs for real women. The woman who wakes up in a different mood every morning woman. The magnificence of a designer like Stella is that through her collections we can be the beautifully complex fashionistas we are. With Stella around we don’t have to begrudgingly dig through our closets piecing together the perfect ensemble because she does it for us with her ready-to-wear.

Whether you’re looking for a steal, can afford to splurge or are heading to the gym, Get some Stella in your life, we don’t know what we’d do without her!

Relying on her business savvy and keen fashion instincts Adefunke Adegbola has built a burgeoning empire known as Ella Brown Couture. Adefunke’s dreams of couture began as a young girl in Nigeria. “I’ve always been fashion obsessed and wanted to be a fashion designer, states Adegbola, “I will cut, snip, sew and tack anything that came my way. My mother is one of my biggest inspirations, she is such a creative/ crafty individual and there is always a very nice touch that shows her personal style”

Now based in Los Angeles, Adefunke devotes her talents to crafting classic and elegant pieces that are feminine and figure flattering, “I love working with fabrics that compliments a woman’s anatomy”. Materials like fine silks, Italian made tulle lace, and chiffon are used to carry out the French baroque theme on which her most recent collection is based with the addition of Swarovski crystals, rosettes, and gemstone embellishments for the ultra-luxe cherry on top. Ella Brown couture is definitely made with the woman who appreciates the finer things in life in mind.

What can we expect next from Ella Brown Couture? Look for the brand to launch a line of cosmetics and fragrance in spring of nest year with its first flagship store in Lagos, Nigeria. Ella Brown couture is already available in over 40 select boutiques and bridal galleries in the U.S, Europe and Asia.

With a timeless and ethnic inspired approach to design, Duro Olowu is taking the international fashion scene-along with our fashion lovin’ hearts-by storm. He caught the attention of industry insiders at Vogue and Barney’s with his signature flowy “Olowu dress” and was later honored at the British Fashion Awards with recognition as the New Designer of the Year. The rest is as they say-history. Now a fixture on the runways of Paris and London, Olowu’s collections take us back to a time when women made an effort to get dressed up in attire that has become today’s cherished vintage .

Suprisingly Duro, who is London based and of Nigerian descent, was first trained not as a designer but as a lawyer. Thank goodness his aspirations turned to fashion! Using limited edition fabrics and proprietary ethnic prints as a springboard for his lively aesthetic, his vision as a global tastemaker is clear, “I like to make clothes for women to feel good about themselves,” he has stated. “And that they don’t feel they’ll see everywhere. I think fashion should be joyful – it shouldn’t dictate to women but it should invite them into the fantasy of the designer who is making them.”

Duro Olowu’s fashion future is showing no signs of slowing down with two well received women’s collections under his belt and plans to launch a men’s collection this year. To find out more about Duro and where to find his coveted creations visit www.duroolowu.com.

With a swoon-enducing funky couture vibe and a prestigious Fashion Fringe award under his belt, we were surprised that we hadn’t heard more about UK based designer Gavin Douglas on this side of the pond. So, Clutch set out to learn more about the design phenom whose recent collections are currently fueling our fashion obsession.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and how you started designing. When did you know that you wanted to be a designer?
I have always had a major interest in art and design. I excelled at school in my chosen design subjects, Art and also Design Technology. I went on to do a BTEC National Diploma in Design at Sutton Coldfield College in Birmingham which is where I first started fashion designing. I then went onto Northampton University.

Q: You won the prestigious Fashion Fringe award in 2006. How do you feel this has impacted you personally and/or professionally?
Fashion Fringe has given me a great platform for my career and the start up help initially needed to help me to begin to develop my design label.

Q: What other experiences/defining moments have had the most impact on you as a designer?
I’ve had the experience of fantastic opportunities over the last 18 months. I’ve worked alongside Elie Saab in his Lebanon couture atelier. I’ve met Anna Wintour, Andre Leon Talley, John Galliano amongst other huge fashion figures. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Kelly Rowland and more recently I was introduced to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown as one of the 50 most influential Black role models in the UK.

Q: What kind of style are you gravitating towards now? What’s inspiring you at the moment?
I’m currently being inspired by culture.

Q: What message or aesthetic do you usually try to convey through your work? Do you have a signature style?
I like to combine different types of fabrics into my collections. I like to use textiles not always used in garments of today, such as salmon skins and perch skins.

Q: What kind of woman do you imagine wearing your designs?
The woman wearing Gavin Douglas is eclectic, unique and not scared to try something that’s different. She doesn’t tend to follow trends and is a confident dresser.

Q: Who are your personal fashion icons or style heroes?
*Charles Worth.

Q: What are a few of your favorite things to do when you’re not busy working?
I like traveling, watching films, and chillin’ with friends

Q: What do you love/hate most about the fashion industry? I love the freedom of creativity and hate the lack of time to do it in!

Q: What do you find the most challenging about your line of work? What makes it all worth it?
You have to be skilled in a large variety of areas not just design. Seeing women wearing my garments and enjoying them makes it all worth it.

Q: Any advice for aspiring designers?
It takes a lot of drive, passion and hard work to succeed in this industry.

Q: Fast forward five years, where do you see yourself?
Continuing in the growth of my label.

Q: Where can our readers get their hands on a Gavin Douglas original ?Harrods and Yoox.com

*Charles Frederick Worth is a designer who dominated Parisian fashion in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Worth’s designs are notable for his use of lavish fabrics and trimmings, his incorporation of elements of historic dress, and his attention to fit.

After constantly being stopped on the street while wearing pieces she’d made for herself, designer Rene Huber launched her tres chic accessories line Goldenbleu. Armed with an eye for detail, undoubtedly honed during her stints in graphic arts and interior design, Huber set out to create accessories that “exuded the quality and sophistication of designer labels while also embodying a fresh design perspective.” Her use of vivid colors and crisp white accents on everything from intricately woven wedges to sleek patent leather clutches for the Spring/Summer collection are certainly in keeping with that goal.

Bi-coastal and international travels between San Francisco, New York, and Florence, Italy serve as inspiration for Rene and may explain the case wanderlust one may experience after viewing the latest Goldenbleu offerings. Her urbane designs would be perfectly fitting for a vacation on the French Riviera or at least constructive daydreaming of the aforementioned getaway.

Using jewelry to bring issues like class disparity and cultural ignorance to the forefront, Kali Arulpragasam, the creative mind behind the line called Super Fertile, has people buzzing for all the right reasons. If her last name sounds familiar it should, she’s the sister of “it girl” M.I.A and clearly talent runs in the family. In any case, we’d be more than glad to make room in our jewelry box for these impressive statement making pieces.

Q: When did you start designing jewelry?
After graduated from Central Saint Martins, then a Creative director for an advertising agency in New York and at the height of my career I started designing jewelry to start something more profound, important and precious. I guess, I was always designing and communicating a message, so the move from advertising campaigns to highlighting global issue using people as my billboard is not that different and I made the move back to London, to grow Super Fertile into a fashion house. Our headquarters is in east London, where all the magic takes place.

Q: Being a Sri Lankan native, how has your culture influenced your designs?
I was born in London and spent the greater part of my life in the UK and the US though from three to ten years old I lived in Sri Lanka and India. If there is one thing that I remember is that Sri Lankan culture is being ruined by war and primitive uncompromising traditional views. I guess this sentiment is echoed by many people who originate from a country that has been ravaged by post colonial corruption and war. I relate to the natural beauty of cultures and people the world over and this influences my designs. That aside, I do have a close affinity for India and her rich cultural past from where the Sri Lankan Tamils descend.

Q: As a well traveled trendsetter, what is your favorite place on earth that gives you the most creative energy and inspiration?
There are so many places. India is beautifully rich in art, music, colour, architecture, needlework, natural materials, etc. It’s like a 24/7 factory of arts. What is unusual about India is that it changes everyday yet hasn’t changed its essence in over 4000 years. They also have such a charming ‘can do’ attitude without having any knowledge, experience, education or tools and sometimes ability – the children really make you smile with their curiosity and joy despite the terrible poverty. The purity and strength of this innocence is an inspiration to Super Fertile and an intrinsic part of me, and I take inspiration from the art and works of Jaipur, Agra and Rajistan.

In Europe I love to visit the art works of Spain and Paris.

Q: Tell us about your latest collection “Tourism”?
The collection came about from being frustrated by not being able to visit Sri Lanka because of a stupid war that has been going on for the last 20 years. I simply wanted to reverse the media trend of showing only violence in this country and the promotion of men carrying guns as somehow heroic. This small minority causing trouble is now the iconic representation of Sri Lanka. I wanted to speak for the majority, for the women and children, for the beautiful landscapes, the amazing wildlife that are now largely forgotten or undiscovered.

The media seems to focus on the negative, so when you Google Iraq, for example, you get images of American soldiers with guns in rubble. This is not Iraq! Iraq has culture, music, fashion, children playing, sports champions, great architecture, etc. I wanted to create a positive tourism poster for the most dangerous countries that we cannot visit.

I started googling for positive elements of countries which are portrayed as being too dangerous to visit. Did you know that Iraq is a great sporting nation in weight lifting? Total surprise! I became a bit obsessed searching the internet, books and libraries. Surely there must be more to Lebanon? What are we missing about Colombia? The cultural diversity in the Central African Republic? Women’s fashion in Afghanistan? Amazing fishing community and tropical fish in the middle of Sudan? Finding all these little wonders from parts of countries becomes addictive. It was a duty and a mission to design a necklace showing the precious beauty of these nations in the form of a tourist poster portraying a proud identity. For example, Sudan in silver or gold becomes instantly precious. Anyone who comes across this collection gasps and wows, they pick their favorite countries by comparing the other countries, they pay attention to the subjects, images, details and cultures. The truth is that these little wonders have been there all along. These necklaces are to be cherished as are these nations.

Q: What type of materials, crafting skills and technologies do you use in your designs?
The first thing is always the message. From this, the idea, the design, the form, the materials and even the size are derived to create a piece that helps to communicate the message with maximum impact. Yet precious and durable and affordable.

We have a highly skilled production team in India that hand crafts every piece using traditional cutting, plating and molding methods. It’s always a challenge to find techniques to create such unique designs that are affordable, highly artistic , unique and precious. We work with silver and gold but the handcrafting, workmanship, concept and design are the more precious aspects of the piece.

Q: Your company is named “Super Fertile.” Is there a meaning behind the name?
I wanted a name that reflected the magic of fresh new life and flourishing growth, both in the physical sense and the creative concepts and ideas. For me, a new born child, a plant and a wonderful creative idea are all miracles that come forward despite all the odds. The ‘Super’ is our way of turbo charging this natural process!

Q: Who are some of your favorite designers?
I pay more attention to great artists and I don’t mean a flash in the pan recording artist. Pablo Picasso is always an inspiration to me, Escher is a mind-blowing visual genius, Freda Khalo for honesty, the Chapman brothers for innovative sculptures and authentic traditional art forms from all over the developing world despite their limited access to materials and technology. In Africa, children make their toys from tin cans, they are my favourite designers!

Q: Out of all of your collections, what is your favorite and why?
The current one ‘Tourism.” From the original concept, the research, the designs, the production down to the photo shoot for the look book, I adhered to original concept with determination, conviction and creative drive. At one point I was scouting the UK for nine models of the nations in question. That’s hard enough but dressing them in national costume really tests your creativity – they don’t do Columbian dress in Wal-Mart and Iraqi national dress hasn’t hit the high street yet! Joking aside I went to every length to maintain the authenticity of the collection and communicate the message in the clearest terms.

Q: We are dying to know – what artists are currently in rotation in your iPod?
Bombay Jayashri to calm me down and Spank Rock to get my heart racing again.

Q: What’s one thing you want people to know about you?
My local council (Merton) educated me, and gave me the foundation to go after my dreams, I never forget the people who really helped me.

Q: What’s next for you and “Super Fertile”?
We have so much to do — you have to wait and see! And as long as there’s issues, we will do a collection, and right now, there are just so many to do! And we will keep going!
I mean, I always appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship involved, but I could really never imagine an occasion for which I would ever need to wear it. Enter demi-couture line, JMary. Sharp and tailored but artfully executed J Mary has changed the way I think about “high fashion.” Her clothing reads serious upgrade and is something that a woman who is serious about fashion can really appreciate.

Finding information on the designer herself proved to be a bit of a task, but finding fans of her work was another story. Diana Ross, Lindsey Lohan, Nicole Murphy, Demi Moore, and Janet Jackson—not a group of women you can easily find a common thread for—have all been seen wearing JMary. While wearing JMary’s quilted leather jackets, fitted suits, or flowing blouses each of these ladies, with their strikingly different fashion aesthetics, looked nothing short of sophisticated.

Fast forward to spring 2008, which marks the debut of her ready-to-wear collection, and I have visions of sitting pretty in luxurious chiffon and silk dancing in my head. All of my favorite characteristics from her couture collections, like astute attention to detail and fit, are clearly carried over to ready-to-wear, but with a touch of practicality that I can image for an utterly fabulous everyday life. Visit JMary.com for more information.

Well, not only does St. Louis native Courtney Crawford understand the importance of a mean shoe game, but he’s been helping ladies like Mariah Carey and Dita Von Teese preserve their sexy in his knock ‘em dead creations.

Those looking to go unnoticed should probably steer clear of anything Courtney has designed. A little bit street and unabashedly sexy, his shoes definitely have an edge. “A Courtney Crawford shoe is for the strong, sophisticated and sexy woman who is interested in wearing a shoe that is a statement of hedonism for the foot,” his site states.

Growing up in an all-female household gave Courtney his insight into the beautifully complex relationship that most women have with their shoes. He also draws inspiration from iconic models from the 80s who were known for being avant garde. Courtney’s resume includes collections designed under his label, as well as developing collections for prominent design houses like Missoni. Andre Leon Talley has even weighed-in on Crawford’s talents, “He embraces the anatomy of a female foot and embellishes it with solid confidence. His shoes always evoke the kind of sensuality that women seek in stilettos.”

We love that Courtney caters to the woman who’s been dubbed as the “racy sophisticate” because that’s exactly what we can imagine ourselves to be as we sashay around in his fur lined boots, pumps with exotic skins and vibrantly hued strappy sandals.
