Is it just me?
Harper’s Bazaar’s December 2010 issue is strikingly reminiscent of Vibe Vixen’s 2006 Holiday issue. The now-defunct print featured a memory-staining image of the queen of street edge, Kelis. Who can forget how fierce and iconic the then Mrs. Jones looked, crystalized with Swarovski studded red lips on the cuffs of her recent marriage to rap king, Nas.
Clearly someone over at Harper’s was moved by the Vixen cover story, photographed by Andrew Matusik with words by our big sister and CLUTCH Editor-at-Large Kierna Mayo.
While the Harper’s cover goes for more old Hollywood glam, also riffing on a 1950’s Vogue cover as pointed out by the Jeze girls, Vixen makes use of bold color, and artsy experimentation with Kelis’ feathered eyelashes. This is evidence of the uncharted work that went down in the pages of one of our favorite fashion and beauty magazines of yesteryear. Moreover, Harper’s indirect nod to the archive of urban innovation firmly marks Kelis’ place as an uncredited muse for contemporary starlets like Katy Perry and Rihanna.
What do you think about the covers? Sound off!
