The search for honor roll student and North Carolina native Phylicia Barnes ended yesterday after her body was discovered in a Maryland river.

Barnes, who had originally been visiting family in the Baltimore area, had first gone missing on December 28th, three days after Christmas. The last word heard from Barnes was a Facebook message stating that she was at her sister’s apartment with her sister’s boyfriend.

11 News has reported that her body was found in the Susquehanna River along with the body of a 6-foot, 4-inch and 240-lb African-American male. The second body has yet to be identified.

Barnes’s disappearance had garnered national attention and she was previously subject to a multi-jurisdictional missing persons investigation. No immediate causes in her death have been determined yet.

Messages of condolence have been updated to the “Pray for Phylicia Barnes” Facebook page.

God rest her soul. I have been following this story from the very beginning and I really hope they find out who did this. May God bless her family and I hope this brings them a little more peace and closure if that is possible.

I never would have known about this case until I reas about it on Essence. Why is it when a balack person goes missing we never get any national coverage. I feel that if I was to go missing as an African American woman I will not be looked for because we get no coverage. I also prayed for a happy ending. To say this is 2011 why are we still a segregated nation. Even with people being missing its still segregated.
