Fashion has always been a champion of environmental and civil causes. From AIDS activism to organic style, fashion with a conscious is more than just a passing trend. While the world is moving in a direction of sustainability, there are a few designers that are ahead of the curve. Here are 3 designers with a passion for creating stylish and sustainable wares that not only give back to the globe, but keep us looking good.

1. Afia

Afia is a sustainable women’s apparel line that is fashion forward in style and purpose. Every piece from the Afia collection is created by individuals. Textiles are sourced from Ghana and hand-sewn by the Dzidefo Women’s Cooperative in the village of Kpando, Ghana. Afia is truly a global, cooperative clothing line that is full of funky style.

2. Duro Olowu

Duro Olowu has been on our radar with his Nigerian-inspired prints and textiles and his recent dressing of Mrs. Obama for the Oprah show. Duro is breaking the mode with his couture designs created from recycled African prints and vintage seventies-style tailoring. Duro’s inspiration comes from his homeland and pays tribute to the stylish women of Mali.

3. ASOS Africa

Using hand-woven fabric, produced exclusively for ASOS AFRICA in Mombasa, the ASOS Africa collection features a mix of elegant separates and playful feminine pieces, shot through with vibrant Kitenge prints from Tanzania. The capsule collection is in collaboration with The Green Room, an initative to support social and environmental concerns.
