A Belle in Brooklyn: The Go-to Girl for Advice on Living Your Best Single Life Demetria L. Lucas
(Atria, June 2011 $24)

Essence Magazine’s relationship Editor has been called “The Black Carrie Bradshaw” for her honest approach on all things relating to love and sex. She’s encouraged women to make the first move, be a bit more proactive regarding relationships and introduced us to her infamous “cutie-runs”. Each month she features some of the country’s most eligible bachelors and asks men the questions we so desperately want to know. In her first book, she offers practical, fun dating advice and reminds us to live our best life, regardless of your current relationship status.

These five are definitely must haves! There is something for everyone and the article does an excellent job of proving that point by providing us (the readers) with just enough insight to keep us wanting more. Great article.

I am DEFINITELY going to drop mula on Belle in BK!!!!! Been following her for years!

  • MarloweOverShakespeare

I’m definitely like, almost 20 years late for this..
and ya’ll are allowed to laugh but..

I’m just discovering Sister Souljah’s lit. I’m reading her first one No Disrespect (published in 1994) and am running through it! (I think I just might read all of her books)

For all you poetry lovers, I suggest you look into Natasha Trethewey’s Native Guard or Bellocq’s Ophelia. These tiny books contain power, enough to recharge you during this summer.

    Happy readings!

Yes, No Disrespect is the truth! It’s right up there with her other classic The Coldest Winter Ever.

Is it just me or does Demetria L. Lucas look like Tisha Campbell? I did a double take, twice :)

  • Alexzandria Chill

My friend and I met Demetria at Essence this past weekend and she did a small book reading. Definately a down to earth chick. I already love her contributions in her relationship column. This should be a great read.
