Last night Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, took home the Miss Universe crown beating a bevy of beauties from around the globe.
This wasn’t the first time Lopes came out on top. She was previously won the Miss Angola UK 2010, Miss Fotogenia 2011 and Miss Angola 2011 awards. The 25-year-old wowed the crowd in Sao Paulo, Brazil and became the first woman from Angola to become Miss Universe.
Lopes replaced last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico, and was ecstatic to take home the honors.
She told reporters:
“Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing,” Lopes said when asked her interview question. “I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
The Miss Universe pageant just celebrated its 60th Anniversary, and this year’s show was expected to draw in over one billion viewers.
Miss Angola Leila Lopes isn’t the first winner from Africa. Previous winners from the continent include Miss South Africa (1978), Miss Namibia (1992), and Miss Botswana (1999).
