The term “mind blowing sex” is a literal one for those impacted by a rare condition: For individuals affected by transient global amnesia, the act of sexing can literally wipe your memory clean. LiveScience cites the story of a 54-year-old woman who showed up at the Georgetown University Hospital ER with her husband, unable to remember the past 24 hours of her life. The only thing she was able to recall was the fact that her amnesia started right after doing it with her hubby – which went down an hour before her arrival to the hospital.
The recently laid, memory challenged elder may have had some good sex, but her lapse in memory was attributed to transient global amnesia. TGA is a rare condition in which the memory abruptly goes on hiatus. LiveScience reports that TGA sufferers have no additional side effects, and the memories tend to flood back within a few hours or so. The uncommon condition leaves scientists scratching their heads because the cause and unusual nature of the disorder remains unclear. Neurologist Sebastian Ameriso, who treated the 54-year-old woman, admits, “We don’t know very much about the cause… It causes a lot of alarm, but this is not a stroke or an event that causes damage to the brain. It’s almost always very benign.”
A sweaty session isn’t the only act that can trigger TGA. Various physically taxing activities can provoke an attack as well. It can happen to anyone, but it appears to affect folks ranging from 50-60 years of age. Fortunately, studies show that the ‘mind erasing’ episodes tend to be a once in a lifetime event. Not only that, scientists believe the root of TGA is not in the brain, as most would suspect, but in the neck. Ameriso and colleagues found that an insufficiency of the valves in the jugular vein could be at the root of it. Ameriso’s case also recounts a tale of a man who in 1964 shouted, “Where am I? What’s happened?” – the moment he orgasmed. As exploration of TGA continues, for a select few, the mysterious condition makes the notion of using sex as a means to clear ones head a bona fide reality.
