Brett Ratner, the director behind the Rush Hour franchise, is not known for holding his tongue. But after snagging one of the best gigs in Hollywood—to produce the Oscars—Ratner has found himself in a bit of hot water.
After a screening of Ratner’s latest film, Tower Heist, the director fielded questions from the audience. After he was asked about rehearsals on the set of the film, Ratner reportedly said, “Rehearsal? What’s that? Rehearsal’s for fags. Rehearsal. Not much.”
If that wasn’t enough to inflame the Hollywood elite, Ratner later went on shock jock Howard Stern’s radio show and made several questionable comments. During the show Ratner bragged about his oral sex skills (claims he’s the best in the world), actress Olivia Munn (he said, “I used to date Olivia Munn.. when she was Lisa. That was the problem. She wasn’t Asian back then), and of course, he dropped the f-bomb again for good measure.
It seems like Hollywood’s power players weren’t too keen on Ratner representing them at the year’s most prestigious event—the Oscars. Now, some are wondering if Eddie Murphy, who Ratner tapped to host the show, will be next to follow him out the door.
Ratner stepped down from the Oscar gig, saying he was just joking.
“It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don’t have a prejudiced bone in my body,” Ratner said. “But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words.”
Maybe next time he’ll think before he speaks.
What do you think? Should Ratner have stepped down from producing the Oscars or should his apology have been enough?
