After making the rather obvious connection between Mitt Romney’s rallying cry to that of an old school KKK slogan, MSNBC issued a formal apology to the Romney campaign.
Daytime anchor Thomas Roberts cited America blog being the first to catch on to Romney’s use of the phrase once (and probably still) repeated by the hate-mongering terrorist group. On Wednesday morning’s broadcast Roberts said,
“So you may not hear Mitt Romney say ‘Keep America American’ anymore, because it was the central theme for the KKK in the 1920’s… It was a rallying cry for the KKK group’s violence and intimidation against blacks, gays and Jews.”
By Wednesday night, Hardball’s Chris Matthews issued an apology, saying Roberts’ previous and “incendiary” statement “showed an appalling lack of judgement. ‘We apologize. We really do, to the Romney campaign,” he concluded.
Turning back to the site that started it all, so to speak, America blog replied to MSNBC’s tail-tucking/back tracking on the initial story, closing with an interesting question that will likely never enter the realm of public debate:
“[Since] Romney is now claiming, between the lines, that Obama is a socialist, why shouldn’t America be asking if Mitt Romney is a Klansman?”
