Alicia and her grandmother

Dr. Henry Louis Gates has been helping people trace their heritage both on and off screen for years, but after singer Alicia Keys agreed to be apart of his show and learn more about her ancestry, a family secret forced her to pull out.

Recently, while discussing his show, Finding Your Roots, Professor Gates spoke about a few of the celebrities who have pulled out of the show. According to Prof. Gates General Colin Powell canceled his appearance because he “had too many cousins already,” and singer Alicia Keys was forced to back out by her paternal grandmother.

Prof. Gates said that after sending Keys’ grandmother a form asking for names of family members, important dates, and any other information she may have, her grandmother pulled the plug, saying: “‘Baby, you can’t be in the series. I can’t tell you why, but you can’t be in the series.”

A few summers ago I began tracing my family lineage through Ancestry.com but never came across any deep, dark family secrets–just a big brick wall called slavery.

But how about you?

Have you ever traced your family history and come across any secrets? Speak on it!
