In a recent interview with a London paper, an adviser for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney says President Obama doesn’t appreciate the “Anglo-Saxon Heritage” of Britain and its upstart child, America.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the Romney camp promises to “restore the Anglo-Saxon relations” between the two countries. Maybe they plan on making Beowulf required reading?
As the Republican presidential challenger accused Barack Obama of appeasing America’s enemies in his first foreign policy speech of the US general election campaign, advisers told The Daily Telegraph that he would abandon Mr Obama’s “Left-wing” coolness toward London.
In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr. Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr. Obama, whose father was from Africa.
“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr. Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.
These remarks come just as Romney gets ready to visit London for the Olympic Games and meet with several world leaders from Britain, Israel, and Poland.
This line of attack, that President Obama doesn’t understand America or its history, isn’t new. Last year, Newt Gingrich accused the president of having “anti-colonial” views passed down by osmosis from his absentee dad, and the refrain that Obama isn’t quite American is evident by birthers who still feel he isn’t a citizen.
Although the Romney camp denies the comment, Amanda Henneberg, a campaign spokeswoman, told reporters, “If anyone said that, they weren’t reflecting the views of Governor Romney.”
So … I guess that solves it?
