Running into your ex, enemies, and others you need to forgive takes prep work on the spirit. Looking great while running into them takes about four minutes. Maxitone is one of the top makeup artists for people of color in Hollywood. He’s worked with stars such as Tia Mowry, Laila Ali, Wayne Brady, Tyler Perry, Christina Milian, and Wendy Raquel Robinson. His makeup line, Maxi.tone cosmetics, debuts in late fall. I sat down with him to get the scoop on quick and beautiful makeup. According to Maxitone, these are the four makeup must haves when time isn’t on your side.

1. Lip Gloss
“Lip gloss is better than lipstick for most women. Don’t use too much gloss; that’s a scary look. Try to buy glosses with wands instead of brushes because they apply better on the lip.”

2. Powder
“After your moisturizer, use a powder. Some women of color make the mistake of using a powder with too much titanium oxide, which makes the skin look ashy. Look at your hands, look at your neck, all of this goes into choosing the right shade for you.”

3. Blush or Bronzer
“Don’t overdo the blush because then you will look like a drag queen! If you can find a bronzer that is not too shimmery, use that instead for a little glow.”

4. Mascara
“Use mascara instead of a liner if you really don’t have time. Apply two layers, and don’t forget the tips of the lashes and the outer corner lashes.”

I’m a makeup minimalist anyway. I barely wear makeup. Mascara, gloss, and in the winter, maybe a bronzer.
