I thought we were done with the faux Gabby Douglas controversies, but apparently Fox News found a new angle. According to guest host Alisyn Camerota and proud Tea Partier David Webb, American athletes—and particularly Gabby Douglas—aren’t patriotic enough.

Camerota commented:

There was a proud moment at the Olympics yesterday when 16-year old Gabby Douglas won a gold medal in gymnastics. The crowd went wild with cheers – though we’re not hearing the chants of ‘USA, USA’ that we’ve heard in some Olympics gone by. And some folks have noticed that American athletes’ uniforms don’t carry the Stars and Stripes look as much as they had in past years. The famous flag-style outfits worn in years past replaced with yellow shirts, gray tracksuits, pink leotards. So how do we show our patriotism at the games?

Apparently, Camerota didn’t watch the U.S. female gymnasts because she tried to pin Gabby’s hot pink uniform on the teen’s “prerogative.”

Despite her assertion that Gabby Douglas chose to wear her hot pink leotard, if Camerota would’ve tuned into the all-around competition, she would have noticed that Gabby’s teammate Aly Raisman also wore the same uniform. So if anyone’s to “blame” for the lack of stars and stripes it’s the US Olympic committee, not the gymnasts.

To claim that Douglas is somehow not proud to be an American when she brought home a gold medal for her country (and while her father is currently serving in the military) is not only wrong, but it’s totally absurd.

But it’s Faux Fox News, right? We shouldn’t care what they think, right?

Unfortunately, the same people who watch Fox News and subscribe to their divisive rhetoric are our neighbors, coworkers, and some of our public officials. While we’d like to think their crazy talk doesn’t hold much sway with the American public, somewhere, someone is nodding their head and agreeing with them. Sad.

I thiink there should have been more concern over the cut of her leotard. I could not imagine my child wearing that in front of the world. I felt like there should have been a blur over her groin area.

There have been comments about this young woman’s hair, her mother and the ‘2nd mom’ whom she lived with to train, too. What is wrong with people? She is beautiful, clearly loved and seems grounded. Energy should be put into being proud of Gabby! She is truly an amazing talent and an inspiration.
