BanThe European Parliament will vote next week on a legislative proposal to eradicate gender stereotypes in the European Union’s 27 states. “Eliminating gender stereotypes in the EU” was proposed by the Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) in 2012 to target all sexist advertising in the EU, including TV shows, video games and music videos.

The proposal also calls for a ban on all forms of pornography, including websites and live streams. FEMM thinks pornography is a “universally accepted, often idealized, cultural element” that leads to sexual exploitation.  This stance is supported by anti-pornography activists, including Catharine MacKinnon. She told the MAKERS series that “exposure to [porn] makes life more dangerous to women” and “promotes a range of atrocities and violence” against them.

MacKinnon’s points are valid. Several studies have shown pornography impacts societal perception of sex and pleasure. However, FEMM and MacKinnon aren’t considering the agency women exhibit by both watching and starring in porn.

Women are sexual beings. We want to be pleasured, and porn is an outlet. Family Safe Media estimates 9.4 million women watch porn monthly, leading to a rise in feminist porn that focuses on women’s pleasure.

Yes, some porn is sexist. Some porn starlets are abused. But if women and men enjoy watching pornography, who is this ban benefitting again?

  • there goes my sex life…..

  • What about the women who work in the industry? Most ofthem were abused and exploited before entering the field. I agree with banning an industry that simply exploits those who were groomed for further exploitation. Gross.

Well, they invented it, so it’s fitting for them to destroy it.

  • I agree that porn is harmful, but trying to legislate it away is not the answer. We should educate people on its deleterious effects and try to reduce the demand.

America should follow suit with a ban. Society thrived before it became legal and it can do so again.
