Who would miss a meal to fight global hunger? Tina Knowles. The designer and philanthropist have partnered with Houston, Texas non-profit Bread of Life Inc. to promote the “Miss A Meal” initiative. “Miss A Meal” aims to feed millions of food-insecure Americans by encouraging those with adequate nutrition to skip one meal per day and donate the money they would’ve spent to Bread of Life. Those monies will be used to provide meals to those without.
“When we say ‘we are starving,’ we have to remember that there are people who are literally starving. If everyone fed one person, one meal, we could make a huge difference,” Knowles explained. “To miss one meal is a small sacrifice to make in the fight against hunger.”
Knowles recognizes the influence of her last name, so she’s enlisted the assistance of her superstar daughters Beyoncé and Solange as well as Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams to promote “Miss A Meal.”
This isn’t the powerful family’s first partnership with Bread of Life. Beyoncé and Solange have been volunteering at the organization since childhood.
“I was 13 and my sister Solange was 8 when we started donating and serving meals to the homeless after church,” Beyoncé explained. “There were people from all walks of life, even children, who needed a meal. We learned that we are all three paychecks away from poverty. It was a lesson in humility for all of us.”
Solange recalls these memories as well. “There are dozens of memories of me and my sister volunteering at Bread of Life, we got to see firsthand how grateful people were to receive a hot meal,” the “True” crooner explained. “For many people this was their only meal of the day and we learned early on not to take anything for granted. I’m passing on those same lessons to my son Julez.”
Millions of Americans are food insecure meaning they’re unsure of where their next meal will come from. Feeding America estimates 50.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households in 2011 and this number continues to increase.
