Do you remember the 90s comedy “Ally McBeal” starring Calista Flockhart? Well anywho, on that show, Ally’s therapist insisted that she come up with a theme song for her life. Sounds hokey, but years later, I ended up doing that exact same thing.
I have not one single bit of musical talent in my body (Singing in the shower doesn’t count, right?), but music is a huge part of my life. If I’m not having a conversation with someone or otherwise engaged in an activity that requires full concentration, I am listening to music. Makes sense that I would come up with a song that encapsulates what I want from life or how I live life.
My choice was “Golden” by Jill Scott. Kind of a typical, totally expected choice, but it really is MY song. The words, the vibe, the tempo–it’s all there. I can literally bop to it as I’m walking down the street. It has a good energy.
A sampling of the lyrics:
I’m taking my own freedom
Putting it in my song
Singing loud and strong
Grooving all day long
I’m taking my freedom
Putting it in my stroll
I be high-stepping y’all
Letting the joy unfold
Whenever I have a challenging day ahead or a big decision to make, I play this song. It puts me in a good mood and reminds me to be pro-active about my happiness. A close runner-up for my life’s theme song would be Stevie Wonder’s “As.” Oh, how I love that man’s music!
What’s your life’s theme song and why? Put some of the lyrics in your comment.
