You may not love all of Tyler Perry’s screenwriting, but you can’t argue the fact that he’s an enterprising media mogul. Tyler understands his audience and offers them the comedy and/or drama they are willing to tune in every week for. Case in point? His new show on OWN “The Haves and The Have Nots,” which premieres tonight at 9 PM EST.
The series, which is OWN’s first scripted drama, follows the lives of the well-to-do Cryer family and the hired help who work in their mansion in Georgia. The show is marked by affairs, deceit, loves, lust, power and greed: the pillars that made soap operas a weekly staple in the homes of many of our mothers and grandmothers.
Tyler Perry is aware of the similarities between “The Haves” and salacious soap operas of yore; in fact, he planned it that way. Shows like “One Life To Live” and “All My Children” drew legions of loyal and dedicated fans. Now that they’re off the air (though revived online), there is a void and Perry hopes “The Haves” will feed viewers’ appetites for soap opera-ready drama and scandal.
“The Haves” may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there sure is an audience ripe for the kind of over-the-top antics the show promises. The lead star, Tika Sumpter, tells The Daily Beast she’s not concerned about potential naysayers: “People will always have something negative to say,’’ she said. “Tyler is telling stories from his own perspective and he does it well. There all kinds of stories to tell and Tyler tells his.’’
