Over the past few weeks, Oprah Winfrey and Iyanla Vanzant have flung open the Lifeclass doors and welcomed in single parents and their children. While previous shows have dealt with fatherless sons and the pain of being a single mother, last night’s show focused on “daddyless daughters.”
Though I haven’t been tuning in these past few weeks (I just don’t want to be depressed, sorry), many on my social media feed found the shows to be quite healing.
Last night’s episode also included insights from Dr. Steve Perry and Geoffrey Canada, two men who have been working to repair the effects fatherlessness and dysfunctional homes have had on our youth.
Many have written about and discussed the effects of fatherlessness on women–from their dating and mating habits to self-esteem—but while a lot has been said about women with “daddy issues,” few people solutions.
According to Vanzant, there are three ways women can begin to heal from growing up with an absent dad: reclaim, redefine and re-create themselves.
