Spike Lee Talks School Daze Sequel

Spike Lee recently sat down with the crew from Black&Sexy TV to talk about his mystery Kickstarter campaign, which has raised over $355,000 of the $1.25 million goal.

But enough about a Kickstarter.

The most interesting part of the interview was Lee’s mention of a script he has for a sequel to School Daze!  This past February marked the 25th anniversary of School Daze, so it’s probably no coincidence that Lee has been sitting on a sequel script all this time.

Here’s what Lee had to say about the script:

“I had the script for [the sequel] to School Daze… a contemporary version, same school… 25 years later. Hopefully I can get Laurence Fishburne to play Dap… he’ll be the president now of the school. It would deal with issues in HSBCUs today… some of the same stuff from the last film… like the pledging process… but also lots of new stuff… like homophobia… it’s a big subject in it… class issues, color, hair texture… but it’s stuff happening today.”

It would be interesting to see the route Lee would take to get this project financed, since he’s all about Kickstarter right now. One has to wonder why he didn’t choose this movie as a Kickstarter project.

You can view the whole interview below. The School Daze talk appears around the 10 minute mark.

“School Daze” is still one of my favorite movies. A sequel, if done right, would be awesome.
