alg-robin-thicke-paula-patton-jpgIn everyone’s defense they were all teenagers, it was 20 years ago and it was a different time, aka “the 90s.” (We once told a white male classmate he was cute during the 90s and he never spoke to us again! Yes, the 90s were so progressive in the Midwest.)

But during that different time, R&B crooner Robin Thicke was his future wife Paula Patton’s secret boyfriend due to fears she had about how others would perceive her for dating a white guy in high school.

Thicke explains the quandry to Howard Stern thusly:

“She [Paula] got a lot and I would take on whatever she was going through when she got home from those issues. The funny thing is, in high school she didn’t take me to prom, her prom, because she didn’t want everyone to know she was with a white guy because she was president of the Black Student Union. I was a secret. She didn’t want to show up with a white guy. Funny right? That was 20 years ago and I do believe that with music and a lot of the influences in movies and entertainment is normally the leader in changing some of these societal things. And I think that times are changing. The new generation doesn’t feel the same way as the last generation…It’s mostly the older people who have those thoughts.”

Obviously, things got worked out for the “Blurred Lines” singer. He and Patton have been married since forever now and pretty much gush about their love to any camera in the vicinity. So, let’s just say, she definitely got over that fear.

I adore Paula but I can’t stand Robin. Every interview he gives it’s like “my wife is black blah blah blah” like he expects props for marrying a “Black” women. Paula doesn’t have conventional black features and she;’s half white… I thought she was a mestizo when she first came out so I don’t know why people give him credit for loving Black women.

Couldn’t agree with you more. It’s kind of embarrassing when he brags about to as I’m sure that there are a great number of black women who don’t think Paula P is ‘black enough’. Yet BET (which I’m pretty sure is white owned now) finds that her ‘blackness’ is enough to get Robin Thicke on the Real (Black) husbands of Hollywood.

I do agree she is not all the way Black, she is half black.

Could have fooled me! Paula must be half white. She’s Beautiful.

  • I wonder how she feels about Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance.

What in the world is “not all the way Black.” She is black! An ounce of black blood makes you Black whether some folks want to accept it or not or call themselves bi-racial. Black is black. And if you didn’t know, there are those who have both black parents and can look like Paula. Educate yourselves!
