A romantic getaway turned sour for one celebrity couple after they were stopped by police, CNN reports.
Actors Cherie Johnson and Dennis White say they were handcuffed and harshly questioned during a weekend trip in South Carolina. Johnson and White, who are both African-American, believe that they were racially profiled.
“I’ve been stopped by the police before, but I’ve never been fearful for my life,” Johnson told CNN about the Sept. 23 incident. “They need some kind of sensitivity training.”
According to their account, the couple said that they were on their way to Myrtle Beach when they pulled off the rural highway and parked by a cotton field to take a picture of the plant. When they returned to their car, they noticed a police officer parked behind them with his lights on. The couple says the officer that approached them, who was white, questioned them about drugs, even though he did not find any in the vehicle. White also said that the officer claimed there was a warrant out for Johnson’s arrest but later recanted the statement.
“He told me … I was being detained for his safety because he didn’t know me,” Johnson said.
The Marion County sheriff issued a statement Monday and said that they will further investigate the racial profiling allegations surrounding the couple’s case.
